Electrical problem

Post by decapman »

Twice now after getting the car (67 911S) warmed up after a run it has refused to start.
The symptoms are
turn ignistion key, get all normal lights on dashboard but starter just will not turn, just a slight click.

My thoughts are that as the engine warms up there is a short somewhere on the starter motor, because next morning or sometime later (presumably after cooling) she starts fine.

I did also notice all sorts of clicking from the rear of the car when driving on full beam as though there may be a short somewhere prior to experiencing this problem.
Any thoughts?

Worth checking the engine & gearbox earthing straps (clean/regrease connections).

Could also be the starter solenoid.

Do as Andy says first. If the problem persists, fit an additional relay just before the starter solenoid, to provide a heavy feed straight from the main battery lead to the solenoid when you turn the key. I have had this problem on every early 911 and 914 that I've had (except the Hillclimb car :? ). It's most embarrassing when you've just had a good thrash, pull in to a petrol station, and it won't start again  , but this has always cured the problem for me.

Cheers! :drunken:
