First Day at School

Post by spotontheroad »

This is scary stuff. Just registered with DDK, just bought a 914 - it's all very new to me, like first day at school. I have loads of questions, but for now I'll just tell you a bit about me and the car. I live in Worcestershire (any other 914s in Worcestershire?) and drive 1987 Audi quattro but have crossed over to the dark side and bought a 914 to restore. It's a 71 1700cc. Actually I have bought 2. One is a really really good shell to build up and the other is deceased, dead, an ex-914 but it has all the bits (OK not all but a lot) that I need to build the good shell. I have not started yet. Done a lot of looking, lot of reading and a lot of compiling wish lists. A mate of mine is rebuilding a 72 911 and he pointed me in the direction of DDK. There's no race to be first but we will be building them at the same time. I'm hoping there's lots of useful advice on DDK.
Why did I by a 914? Always wanted one, but then I always wanted a quattro, but the 914 was the first car I remember going over 100mph in. I was about 10 (1971), sat astride the centre console with a leg in each footwell, no seat belt, with my cousin and my dad - how times have changed. Wouldn't do it now!
So there we are. The fun starts now.....

Great story, like you I wanted a 914 from a early age, if you can count fifteen as early  Had mine a couple of years now and it still brings a smile to my face every time I look at it.

Welcome to DDK, look forward to following your progress with the restoration.

Feel free to ask any questions, there's a knowledgeable lot of folk on here.

Thanks for the encouragement. I have not yet started work on my car but am reading up all I can on forums and books. I'll post some pictures whn I get 5 minutes. It doesn't look very impressive but I expect you'll have seen worse!
Many thanks

 if you take a look at most of the restoration threads its noticeable that the one thing they have in common is :

stage one: buy car= great excitment

stage two: enthusiastic work starts stripping car down

stage three: break for breather and ordering parts

stage Four: depression as realisation that its going to cost more and car now looks worse than it did when you bought it.

stage five: think about selling project

Stage six: DDK talk you into hving another go

Stage seven: improvments start to be seen

Stage eight: new enthusiasm is found

stage nine: you start making plans and bookin events using the car

Stage ten : realise car won't make event so post on DDK that yo can't attend

DDK come to the rescue and give you a moral kick up te arse you need to get that car finished and to the Event. else suffer the wrath of DDK

Hello Keith and welcome not only to DDk but to fourteen world as well, you won't regret buying it!! There's a good few of us on here to help you along the way. Some of us will be at the TIPEC show at Gaydon this Sunday.

Good luck with the restoration!!.

Brilliant  sums it up so well. you missed the final stages though,

stage eleven : finish car, enjoy events

stage twelve : forget all the hassle you went through

stage thirteen : see lots of other cars, yearn for 'something else'

stage fourteen : start asking around on DDK

stage fifteen : return to stage 1 and repeat... again... and again
