Hey Guys,

Thanks for all your input, firstly im glad to hear that a stock motor is man enough to keep up with modern traffic. Secondly it is my car and I could do whatever I like but its nice to hear other peoples views especially when it comes to such an important car. I wouldnt want to go off on a tangent do everything wrong and ruin a piece of motoring history.

Cheers Mike for taking the time to post such an in depth reply. I want my car to be the best I can achieve.
Body work scares me a bit so that is going to be left up to somebody with better skills and more confidence than myself. As far as the mechanics go I am looking forward to getting my teeth into it. I have stripped and re-built engines previously and if I could find somewhere to do it I would do the machining myself.

Ive got a lot of choices to make before the car is finished and its nice to know that if Im not sure about the answer Ive got some very knowledgeable people to assist.

Helpful stuff from Mike at PRS as usual

I'm with the do what you like as long as its reversible thing. I feel a little attached to this project cos I spent a lot of time thinking about it and looking atthe pictures..looking forward to seeing how it goes.

I wonder if the Harry Pellow rebuild DVDs would be of any use if you haven't rebuilt a 356 motor before?

So your saying it wont look good sprayed in the focus st orange

Only joking....... It will be going back to its original colours, inside and out.

One question though, How does everybody know what the original colour is?

a couple of the sites and books have quite a comprehensive number matching system to the original specs, where you could locate the original colour listed, interior trim etc. it was all done in batches in the factory I guess.
If its a match to a swatch you have, most factors will happily mix your colour up.
If you have no idea what the colour looks like 'in the flesh' then there is a guy in the US that has the swatches- I think 912uk used/uses him.

I got the wording slightly wrong......... What I meant to say is how does everybody know what the original colour of my car is? bearing in mind its multi coloured in the picture of it with no sign of grey anywhere.

Its just me that knows it was grey over red, cos the seller told me!
You could find out for sure from the VIN of course..

If you need a colour match for Slate Grey then Paul or Mike at PRS may be able to get a match, if you ask nicely enough!

The original paint code number should be on the little plate inside the passenger door post along with the vin number, that is if you've still got it and are not sure on the original colour.
Slate Grey is a great colour anyway IMHO.

Once you know either the name of the colour or the code you can try something like this to look it up (as mentioned the paint tag is probably the first place to look if the car still has it)

Its going to be quite a long way off before Im in a position to paint

Im starting to get a good list of web sites that will be a great help during the resto of my car.

Is there anybody out there who just loves working on 356's and fancies doing the bodywork cheap

Just a quick one, going off topic but is anybody going to make an appearance at the porsche and veedub show on the 30th september at wellington country park nr reading?
I posted a topic on the future shows thread. Would be nice to see some 356's in the metal as ive only come across speedster reps so far.

not much now i hope. ebays 2billion profit is prob down to me getting bits.
I could do with a dash top and door top metal trims, prob seals for the doors................its in the filler stage and a few last patch repairs I've missed.
I managed to get a wiring loom which I was pleased with, so the refit will be fun.
Also need a decent carpet set for the permiters, as I will hopefully be running rubber matts- another ebay purchase was a set of hessian type foot mats which will look cool.
Oh, and a Nrdi horn button.- not looking forward to buying that one, its a period (1960) big dish wheel, worth a few bob, which means the horn button is £££££ oh well!
