Which flywheel do i need to put a Type IV into a 912?

Post by Tedri Mark »

Alright there, I have a 2L type IV engine from a VW T25 which I'm planning to put in my 67 912. What flywheel do I need to be able to do this? Any for sale on here?

I'm looking to do something similar as the power plant in my 912 has recently given up the ghost. :(

From reading around a bit, in particular the excellent 'How to rebuild your Volkswagen air-cooled engine' by Tom Wilson (buy it at http://www.vwbooks.co.uk/) I think you need a 914 flywheel. The 914/6 is similar but won't work unfortunately.

Apparently it's all down to the teeth - how many, how big, etc.

If anyone should happen to have two for sale, can I hijack this post & take one? :)

A lot of folks are doing this over here in the US at present but probably with a type 4 from a 914 or 912E.

Check this site and post for some questions:

This is the renegades forum so should give you some answers.

You're going to have to think about your engine support bar too.

i`ve used a type 1 engine & flywheel bolted to a 901 box in my `67, that worked fine, isnt the type 4 flywheel smaller? 200mmm? i maybe wrong, and out of interest i`ve changed the box for a 915, smaller bellhousing.......now i think type 4 fits in that, but to get type 1 to 915 to work kennedy engineering in the states made a flywheel for me and relitivly cheaply too, if your stuck they will produce anything for you and have knowledge of vw and porsche 8)

I have a VW type 4 engine in my 912e (not the original engine but a VW replacement) and it mates up fine to my gear box (original) which is essentially a 915 box. I know this thread is about flywheels, but can anyone tell me what clutch I should fit to the above. The current one is starting to slip.
Cheers.

Hello, Guys.

The VW flywheel will often work, for a while!

Unfortunately, not for long.

the problem is the ring gear is not far enough into the bell housing so the starter only engages partially and knackers itself and the flywheel.

A 914 flywheel is the fix.

Kind regards

Cool, cheers guys, I'll hunt out a 914 one then...

As for the support bar, i have the one from the van the engine came from, I was gonna lop off the ends and weld brackets on to connect to the correct points.

VW Type Motor

The last mesage was the real truth, I know have just been through it as my 914 Flywheel was knackered and I thought, I'll get myself a VW type 4 as they are as littel as £40. Whoops, no can do, not deep enough both for the starter and the clutch kit.

Find yourself a decent 914 flywheel and it will patch your VW type 4 with your Porsche G/Box.
