Am posting my own reply to my own question cos i have just found out that the key number is on the cam arm (the grey metal triangular shaped bit) that the barrel screws into at the back end of the handle. Nice result, looks good.

That initial disappointment when it first comes apart (and you see just how 'simple' the job's going to be) is now balanced out by knowing that the end result is really sound.

No need to worry about that bit of the car for a while longer.
