Paint colour on an open 356 ??? Opinions welcome

Post by higs356 »

Hi All
For reasons I'd rather not go into for fear of causing a diatribe on panel beaters and paintshops I've had to strip the paint off my 356 and redo some work so I need to repaint it.

The car was originally Ivory with black interior and oatmeal carpet
however the original owner who I am lucky enough to be in contact with had it sprayed silver after buying it (built late in 59 so there were no more Conv ds with silver available due to transition to the roadster model)so it has always been silver with black.

I had always planned and did repaint it silver but now I'm on a rethink ...should I repaint it ivory ...and if I do ...should I change the interior.
The car is matching numbers but my history file has pictures of it right back to 61 with silver ...in fact I have none of it as an ivory car.
What think ye??

Lots of examples of both available at
http://convertibledregistry.com/index.html

Some samples of what it should look like here ...

Silver with red.

My old 1956 356A Speedster was originally Aquamarine, but by the time I got it, it had also been white and red. I agonised for a long time, and eventually, after a total refurb - painted it black, with black interior, but always wished I had taken the opportunity to do it silver with red interior.

Don't mess around this time.

Cheers

but, have to confess i would proberly chicken out and keep it how it has looked for most of its life. so that it matches whats shown in its history file.

i've voted for "something else" as i reckon it would look amazing in black with red leather. i know its not original, but i dont think it would look out of period, and would give a nice slightly modern twist

i agree with H though; i'd probably chicken out to and do it "as-was" (white or silver) to match the history file or original build if it was mine

I voted "something else", because I really love slate grey with a red interior.

OK
Big move towards ivory and brown sofar

I have had a black porsche before ...they look awesome if the paint is perfect and they have just been washed but they are high maintenance.

On whether I'm confused ...yes :) ...but others' opinions are always welcome and valued.

If its a keeper- do what you want!!!!

I guess I can also see the appeal of ivory and saddle brown...

for some strange reason which i cannot put my finger on , i feel the coupes' look better in silver than the open cars ...which ironically seem to work best in ivory or the light blue (meisen ?)

+1 :) Its your car. Do what you want with it. Unless you want it in Fraise then we'll book you a session with Bert. Now watch someone post a pic of a 356 in Fraise that looks stunning. Has Nick finished his Fraise racecar yet? Hmm. the wine is kicking innow. Bien nuit.

yep ...agree and although I wouldve said silver ...I'm now slowly leaning towards Ivory too

One of my favorite pics of a conv D is a b/w pic of what is likely to have been an ivory car ...

and this is another favourite ...in fact it was this picture that set me off on a quest to find a D
