I have just found my old copy of Classic Cars from September 1997 as I wanted to re-read the article regarding Robert Lancaster-Gaye's modified 911S that was mentioned in another thread. I had seen his Autofarm built and modified car a PCGB event and loved it.

Continuing to flick through the old magazine I looked at the Classic Car Price Guide for our cars:



Earlier in that year I had paid £3500 for my project car which seemed about right and I remember seeing up and running cars for about £7k but that was just out of reach for me at the time.

In that same year a good friend of mine was offered an RS that needed a little bit of work for £10k but just couldn't raise the cash.

I know that this was 28 years ago but wow how prices have moved.

It's not only the prices that have changed.

I got my first 911 around that time (I think it was the end of '97) - a '69 911E that I bought from a Dealer in Ohio (Jerry Bensinger).

It was $6k (I think the exchange rate was around $2 to £1 at the time) & I got free shipping because I was working in the eves for a dealer importing XK's from the US & they had a container coming over with some spare space in it.

97 is around when I bought my first 911T and those prices are about right thinking back to what I paid

Just before RS Tourings dropped to around £25k. My 914/6 cost me £5k around then, so about right - 914/4s were readily available at a grand.

In 1991 I went to look at a 914/4 project that was adverised at £250.00 Anticipating a purchase I went prepared with a trailer. When we got there it was worse than I imagined and I told the seller so. Seeing that I was towing a trailer and he was desparate to clear his garage he said that I could have it for free. I declined and drove home with an empty trailer

I paid £2250 for my 914/4 in 1994.

My very rough 911T, 1973 with a 2.2 engine and a lot of rust was £2800 in 1988.
I feel that was top money, but it was delivered on a trailer to my house from a very back street dealer in Coventry.

Found in Exchange & Mart!

The 3 days after those pictures were taken were the start of my '911 Apprenticship', still on-going...
Got 2 fat albums full of the early days with this car.
All taken on 35mm film no less, no digital!
