Clutching at straws here as I think I know what the answer is going to be…

I have bought myself an engine which seems to have undergone a rebuild and then stored with very little use. The guy selling didn’t have the history but believed it was a “912 application based on an industrial engine” but I knew it had 356-look to it. It’s got 12V electrics and a 912-flywheel, but it has a 356 third piece.

Is there a way to use the 356 third piece or must I source a 912-specific one? I was thinking one could use pipe/billet extenders to the stud bolt areas so the 912 engine mounts brackets would fit, but I am afraid that could induce a lot of side load on the stud bolts.

I think you need the 616/xx number of both pieces. Then someone will be able to tell you if compatible

The case halves have the 616/33-1 type mark, but I don’t think I can find the type on the third piece (?). The third piece has P *012xxx* engine number.

The third piece has the shallower casting around the top studs, so not a 912-suitable design outright. The question is if the third piece can be used at all.

Probably best to contact Mike at PRS or Max at Revival Cars, both specialists in 356’s and 912’s respectively who have probably come across this situation and can provide the necessary third piece if needed?

Your Industrial Engine serial number is very close to my engine (48970077)
I would have to go back and read, but according to information from Harry Pellow, mine was manufactured around July 1970 or so, just after the 912 era. It is a model 616-33/1 Industrial Engine, 1680cc (1700), low compression ratio of 7.5:1. With its single barrel Solex 32BIC carburetor, the engine was rated and tested at 54 BHP (DIN) at 3600 RPM.

Mine has been taken down to the long block, and re-assembled as an auto motor, with dual Zenith 32NDIX Super carbs, 022 distributor and coil, PreMat Full Flow Filter, appropriate tinwork, etc. It is currently installed in my 1973 VW Type 181 Thing, and it is a kick to drive. It probably has no more horsepower than a Normal (but 50% more than my original Type 181 engine!), but that 1700cc and the Zentih carbs make for some nice driving and cruising fun, very torquey in the low to mid range. I have never taken it much above 4000 RPM, because it is so much fun below 4000, and also I have been too lazy to look up inside of it to see if it has the chill cast cam followers from a Normal (good for better cam wear characteristics, but not good for high RPM).

The parts of this engine make a great base for a 356 engine, usually the parts are C parts (cam, heads, etc), and have little to no wear on them, which can save you lots on a new engine build.

Thanks for all the help. Project of refitting the 912 with an engine moving on nicely (although too slowly).
I need to reinstall the long-version studs into the crankcase. The top four (two per side) that go thoroug the timing cover and to which the engine mounts are mounted. Would anyone have the dimensions of those studs at hand? M8 x 60 or something along those lines. NLA at Design911, but thinking this is standard studs.
