Front bonnet & engine lid struts ...

Since it's ~ 13 years since I last owned an early 911 I'm a bit out of touch with regards to the quality of some of the aftermarket parts.

What is the general consensus on the best bonnet struts these days - or are they all a waste of time & I'm better off fabricating a fixed length hinged support rod ?

Same goes for engine lid struts.

In both cases they're std steel panels.

I have just replaced a set of URO ones after a year with Mayle 430N struts.
You take pot luck with what ever you buy

FWIW:
I replaced my original rear strut on my 73T about 5 years ago with a part from Type911.
Works well, the lid does not shoot open as the release is pulled, but once you have the lid about 100mm open it opens with a vengence. (steel lid)

Closes well with some force needed, downwards pressure on the P and E of the rear badge.

I removed the original front struts when I fitted the 'glass bonnet in 1995 as they distorted the glass panel.
I think I still have them, you are welcome to them Andy if you want them and I can find them.

Thanks for the replies.

I appreciate the offer Graham but I've decided not to bother with gas struts for the bonnet - instead I'll fabricate a swivelling fixed length rod-type prop.

I doubt this will be of interest but I have a couple of really nice self-locking struts (from rennline IIRC) but they are aluminium and carbon. I suppose you could spray the carbon black.

They are nicely made - the bonnet locks open and then lifting it slightly unlocks it

With my AC they will no longer fit so I’ll be selling them.

OK Andy, found them on the shelf yesterday. When I fitted the 'glass bonnet in 94 ish I made a simple bonnet prop which lays alongside the NS top mount.
Length of 8 mm dia steel tube from B&Q and a few bits found in the garage, all good.

Simple is best.

Ooh I’d be interested in those Mark.

Hi Andy,
I used Meyle 440 160 3840 when I had my car stored and they have been fine since then. Not too strong to push up the bonnet near the hinge and I have not had any issues with the lid dropping either. They are £15.22 on eBay
Kind regards
Gitesh
