1969 cars had black engine bays and boot areas. I know that much. Well at least Karmann produced cars. The inner wheel arches were black also. I believe the interior was body colour apart from the usual black bits. Not sure of the underside of the pan as my car didn’t have one and the bits that were left was rust!

Yes that’s my thought also. I need to try and find a thread showing this. I think mine was black underneath.

Would I be right in saying the car is prayed in body colour with the black over the top?

Anything that was black on mine was black all the way down to the metal/rust. All of the inside of the passenger area was body colour over under seal on the inner sills. The centre tunnel was black. The floor that was left under the road signs and biscuit tins was body colour on the inside.

Looking for the info on how far the under seal came up the outer sills for mine at present. I would imagine that it was not far off a SWB car and there are loads of threads over on ESR. Mine is an early 69 car though and still has stamps on the doors etc for the build number. I thought that had been discontinued with the LWB cars.

Also has me wondering if the early LWB cars had the wings painted off the car at the factory and then assembled as per the SWB cars.

But I am not being too precious over originality. For mine I am going down the route of painting the interior and all the undersides in black epoxy and probably gravitex on the undersides and wheel arches with another coat of epoxy over the top to ensure that I don’t have to replace what I have replaced previously.

Hi Lee, mine is a 70MY car completed 1/12/69, and I'm sure the engine bay was painted in body colour then black over. Cheers Ian

The white is the rubberised underseal and seam sealer. Turns black when it gets hot and rust is encrusted in it, (did I mention my carwas a Little bit rusty?), sticks to your skin and retains heat exceptionally well. I still have a few burn scars from stripping the front wheel arches! Wear long sleeved cotton overalls when taking that stuff off is the lesson learned.

The car I am restoring is a 68 Karmann built LWB 912. The build numbers are stamped on the flat part of the door shell two thirds along the door towards the latch. Ill try and get a couple of pictures. The numbers stamped on the panels is 50. I have to old rusty wings and will have a look in the headlight bowls when I get a chance. Found them all on my SWB 912 when I restored that
