Re: That Vestey car….
The race version was just a few stickers and unbolted horn grilles and fog covers, so probably stock with magnetic numbers I reckon.

Re: That Vestey car….
Some more slicing today, Mark is getting all the grot and rot out of the awkward areas. I particularly like this shot of the rear shelf area
Interesting to note that it looks like they used sections of another cars rear shelf to braise patches in for ‘repairs’ sometime in its distant past!

Re: That Vestey car….
Some inner wing improvement has occurred. Possibly speaker holes before they realised the back of the speakers were getting covered in road rash from the wheels?
That’s better. No wet speakers for me!

Mark also sliced that mess of a shelf out. Think there’s about 5 shipments of panels about to land at his place this week, he’s going to be a busy boy!

Re: That Vestey car….
Great reports.
That is not brazing, just awful codging up.
Will be fab when all done.

I haven’t actually seen the car I the flesh since blasting, that pleasure awaits me tomorrow, but you’re right- while it looked like brazing pre blasting, it now looks like something from a tube in screwfix911hillclimber wrote: ↑Wed Oct 12, 2022 10:32 pm Great reports.

Re: That Vestey car….
Well it’s been a while, quite a lot of back and forth with panel suppliers, incomplete orders I didn’t know I had to verify etc etc etc, I’m sure you all know the score
Mark has been busy again noticing things. One of them was that the 1965 scuttle is different to later ones, or any of the replacement panels available. It seems to have maybe been a design flaw they corrected? Anyways, replacement scuttle has now been modified so it’s exactly the same as the unsalvageable one coming out-

Re: That Vestey car….
We found the same issue with the inner sills. It seems that they are all listed as 66 onwards, the pressings are different on earlier cars. Even though once it’s together it’ll never be seen, the inner sills were modified by Mark to be 100% correct again.
It’s lucky that there was enough of the original to see the shapes clearly

Re: That Vestey car….
There have also been a lot of small localised repairs to otherwise sound panels going in, this is one example on the rear inner wing. Probably where the underbody coating got damaged then water sat against the metal decades ago resulting. In an odd rust hole.

Re: That Vestey car….
It turns out that the white blobby stuff was actually brazing, it just took on that white look after the treatment post blasting! Very odd. Anyways, old weird brazed speaker hole mess is now banished from this inner wing. Also note that the mess of a seatbelt mount has been replaced.

Re: That Vestey car….
Finally time to get some metal inside the rear end. 2 rear shelves later, we settled on modifying one of them to be correct as none of them seem to be particularly accurate. The edges of the firewall were toast but the middle was sound, so Mark let in sections of the replacement panel
Along with fabricating another repair to close up the top of the rear inner wing
Maybe more updates tomorrow, feels good to see gaps being closed up instead of more appearing
