Thanks, I have the manual - it just says put it between the plates and it's unclear which ones. I put it between 2 and 3 like 911Hillclimber said, and was able to get reliable tension adjustment. I tightened the tension in the bottom bobbin using a teeny weeny screw, and once I had the top tension comparable to that, we seem to be in business.

Re: Sewing Club
Hey Rob, check that the thread is pulled in-between the two plates, and not running around the outside.
A walking foot machine would be a lot better for what you're trying to do.

Re: Sewing Club
Hi Rob, I like the look of this thread(!) already. I'm up to my neck sorting out my late Mum's house at the mo and she did some amazing car upholstery, and I think 201K was what she referred to when talking about her machine.....does yours have a badge/label identifying it as a 210K? ive not identified any of the 5 (so far) machines ive come across yet (though I haven't tried that hard either) W

Wow you've done a pretty job there. I just came a hair's breadth away from buying tan leather for my seats, but I decided on black in the end. The car was originally tan.

Re: Sewing Club
I'll take a look when I'm next by it but the device that restricts your forward/backwards stitch length rotates and brings two plates in top and bottom at an angle, which should identify it as a 201. The K signifies a UK made model.Winston Teague wrote:Hi Rob, I like the look of this thread(!) already. Re: Sewing Club
Well Her n me are definitely in the market as it were! Mrs Gridgway is a sewing nut focussed on quilting. She teaches it, does classes to be taught it and works in a quilting shop. She's recently given away a modern machine to an offspring, so there's a space.
And I want to remake my Caterham mats so we need a machine capable, which the 201 looks to be.

I'll be using mine in the coming days or weeks on vinyl and leather... I'll let you know how it performs.

Re: Sewing Club
FWIW here’s a picture of the rear seats of a DB5 to show semi-circular pleats as you get from stuffing them with a sort of crude cotton wool like stuff. They look exactly as when they were new, had to because it was a one family owned car amd they were very particular.
So many retrims are ruined by square section pleats that you get from stitching down over cut sections of foam.
If anyone is interested, I may have photos showing how it’s done.

Thanks Rob. I do sew for a living so moving onto seats wasn't too much of a stretch. Also I have an upholstery working for me on boat interiors whom I've learnt a lot from.
Leather is a great material to work with. It sews really nicely, plus you can shrink out any minor imperfections with a hair dryer.
