Fair to say the market for rhd As with race history is small & opaque

US race cars tend to be cheaper than nice road cars but it's not straightforward to convert them to road or European race specs. Vic Skirmants is a face on the US 356 racing scene, this successful coupster of his made $59k on bat:

I can attest to how nice this Studer built lhd C rally car is. No 'period' competition history but competed in the Historic Monte and made £70k in 2019

Where they shakes hands will depend I think on the the amount of work to bring it up to current race standards, the significance of the race history and the premium a buyer places on the history and rhd

A registered normal coupe in race condition with HTP’s is at least in 200 k range as costs about 250 k to professionally build.If it’s a Speedster GT or Carrera2 GT start talking at a million
Problem is there are very few people in UK who can build a proper race car.

That's interesting John.

Is the £250k build cost to be on the pace rather than pass scrutineering?

What's the rough split parts vs labour (accepting that if you did your own spannering you wouldn't get the same results as an experienced race car builder)?

Who would you consider capable of building a proper 356 race car (assuming this is not privileged information?)

Would the history of the car / owner need to be significant to ensure entry to events like the Revival or Le Mans Classic?

It’s 2000 hours Labour.
Lots of cars have been built with oversized engines which is unfortunate at 1720 cc but this situation seems to be reducing.All 356 ‘s now have to have there exact engine sizes. Pre A’s and earlier were allowed plus 5 % but that’s no longer the case.
I had my last car built in US and then Gareth Burnett played with it at Pace Products .It was minimum weight and decent power.Won many things including handicap in Grid 2 at Le Mans Classic ,A real Pre A.
Sold it at a loss of about 40 k but won’t go into that!
If you have a special car or it’s one of several entries that give to organisers for their various series you can get into LMC and Goodwood it’s a historic car but also knowing the team who organise the event helps
The quickest 356’s in UK now are the two that Bill Stephens owns and self prepared. Helps that Will Stephens is a very quick driver!Bill has been screwing them together for years.
