If you were selling - Where?

Post by alfietom »

If you were looking to sell your early 911 where would you look to sell it?

Would it be best to place it with a Specialist, although have been a few horror stories of late, plus probably a selling fee of 10%?

Maybe an ad on a site like carandclassic.co.uk but then you have to deal with all the tyre kickers, dreamers and fussy old blokes.

Ebay maybe

I'm maybe looking for a new Porsche project some just doing a bit of research first.

I’d say as long as your advert is honest and doesn’t portray it as something it isn’t then it’s all good.

It’s only when the car turns up described as ‘100% original’ or ‘concours’ then the picking will happen.

If it’s got non original bits and pieces then just say. If it’s not described as original and it’s got the wrong lamp housings then who cares?

I agree. It’s the ads that get picked on, not the cars.

I’d say it depends on the result you want:

Quickest deal, lowest price is sell direct to a dealer.
Quick deal, medium price is Collecting Cars.
If you want top price are busy and you don’t mind waiting, possibly months, then SOR with a dealer can work very well.

I’d personally spend some money to get professional photos done, do a personal walk-round video talking to the camera and the car pointing out all the good and bad bits and explaining how much you love it so buyers can see the sort of owner you are and then pay to put it on Pistonheads, autotrader, car and classic, eBay etc. But that’s because I have enough spare time, like doing all that stuff and don’t mind people coming to my house to buy my car. YMMV.

I would agree, DDK would be a good place to start and I have rarely seen a car in the classifieds being given a hard time. There have been discussions on market place that are a bit more critical but I think that is usually for the benefit of the DDK community and no one else. I think a good ad will be well received and I know a lot of people look on here for potential purchases but there seems to be very little on offer.

Otherwise, Collecting Cars seems to be attracting a lot of interest and selling a lot of cars. Seems relatively simple and at minimal cost to the seller.
The force is strong in this one ......

I advertised my car here on DDk. The next day a man rang up and offered me the asking price. I was as easy as that.

As soon as the car is put up for sale on DDK Bootsy locks the thread so there is no chance of anyone picking apart your pride and joy. Your ad thread starts and stops with your words and pictures. If it’s your 73T then you might be very surprised at the interest. You might have to put up with a few long wasted phone calls (as you live where you do) from time wasters but at least that saves a lot of tyre kicking wasted days. However, I would say a genuine buyer should want to come and inspect which might be a little bit of a challenge just now so be prepared to take and send lots of good quality pictures on a follow up basis.
Let’s see what you have.........

Regards
Mike

I have just looked at some of your posts, which then link to your flicker account, and there are plenty of really nice shots of what I assume is the car in question, an ivory white 911.

It looks really great, and as others have said, the cars that get picked on are ones claiming to be something they are not, or the description is wide of the mark for what it is, with parts wrong or missing.

Looking at your photos I do not think you would not have any problem selling to a member on here, or a member that knows someone that is after an early 911.

You might find you are already getting PM’s asking about the car, just from posting what you have?

Give it a go, its free and you have nothing to loose.

Interesting that no-one has suggested Silverstone Auctions as an auction route, I've a feeling they're losing out to Collecting Cars, possibly because they still charge high fees in spite of most of the action being on -line.
Also I think its possible to get a better deal with SoR specialist than 10%, from some conversations I had last year. If I was a buyer I'd be much more comfortable buying via a specialist, knowing I've seen the car, test driven it and had more time to research and ponder than perhaps via the auction route. It may be just me but I can't forget the old image of Motor Trade auctions I went to, all the traders in sheepskin coats, where cars went in because either there was something wrong or someone wanted money fast.

I agree. Silverstone just look absurdly expensive when you’re not getting the benefit of a physical auction. 12.5% buyers fee and 5% sellers, both plus VAT means 21% of the hammer price in total.

A, say, £60k T ends up as a £47k car and £13k in fees.

You can get lucky at auction though. You just need 2 people with more money than care.

I just tried to buy a cheap house at auction that the seller paid £230k off Rightmove through an agent in the summer, chopped off the garden and put it straight back to auction at £150k and it sold for £251k. The seller got a free building plot and £21k because two people weren’t thinking carefully on the day.

I'm sure you're right about potentially getting a higher sale price, an auction can generate feverish excitement which carries people away, also the on-line versions now probably find a much bigger audience than a dealer.

How about Tradeclassics? Great auction site. They do all the hard work with detailed descriptions, photos and videos. 5% buyers premium. That’s it. I rare them
