Think I need a new voltage regulator
Anyone had experience with either replacing or refurbishing the old one (which actually looks in good external condition)
Any thoughts would be gratefully received

Just buy a modern Bosch. They are about £30/40.

I would take the opportunity to 'upgrade' to one of Bosch's newer electronic regulators - they look virtually identical to the original electro-mechanical version.
I did this recently with my 1.3HF Fulvia which uses a very similar (same ?) VR:
