Giroflex Championship 1986

Post by 23e Heure »

In the early 80s I attended a few of the Willhire 24 Hour races at Snetterton.

Just came across the event programme from the 1986 edition.

One of the support races that weekend was a round of the Giroflex Championship (then in its second year).

Thought the programme coverage may be of interest to some DDKers

Plenty of familiar names competing that weekend.

And just marvel at the cars on the grid!

I also found some snaps of my own from the Giroflex round at Snetterton.

I think these may be from 85, rather than 86 though.

Rather average shots... but I would have been 11 or 12 years old at the time, and using a very basic camera too!

Brings back memories James !!

I'm sure I've got some photos I took at various circuits - most likely Brands Hatch & Silverstone - so will have a sift through ...

Incidentally, Ann Johns - one of only 2 female drivers in that race entry list (the other being Caroline Lucas) - was the owner of the Gulf Orange RHD Carrera RS (PMC 29L) that featured in Supercar Classics - including a photo on the front cover.

She raced the car too but I don't think she was in her own car on this occasion.

This was her car at the Beaulieu early Porsche event in 2005 - the same day that Nigel (Mitchell) collected his Chartreuse RS from Jack Logan ...

- infact the Chartreuse car was parked behind Ann Johns' car.

Andy: Did Ann Johns have a white with red RS too?

Around 2007/8 I went to look at a pair of second hand front wings in Chelsea.
The chap had a lock up just off the kings road.
Can’t remember his name now, although I’m sure he contacted me via a WTB on DDK.

He told me that he had met his other half racing, and that she had, or used to have, both an orange RS and a white with red one.
No wonder he found himself to drawn to her

The series that 'sold' me on a 911 but for hillclimbs, circuits looked far to much like a bomber-derby.

I have a VHS video somewhere of that series around 88 I think inc the Irish round at Mondello Park (?)

Found Bob Watson as a result of this series and his E was always battle scared....

Some of those names cropped up far further back in my Hot Rod youth, Jamie Maserati for example.

I don't remember her having another Porsche at the same time.

I remember that she lived in Holland Park though.

I remember him - fairly sure his name was 'Andrew' - can't remember his surname though ...

Yes Andrew rings a bell.
Maybe it was actually he who had the white with red RS, as he certainly told me he had one too.

Oh brain cells and memory banks... and I’m one of the younger members around here
