Re: 987 Spyder
Although complicated how long does it take to take down and put the roof off

Re: 987 Spyder
That looks lovely James, I remember looking at a similar car a few years ago, perhaps Witton Castle, and marvelling at the roof design.
Looking forward to hearing how good it is.

Re: 987 Spyder
Very nice James, that’s the hat-trick; early, mid and modern. Great collection and a brilliant spec

The only difficult bit is getting the main sun canopy rolled up correctly. As it it , maybe a few minutes to remove and stow away. Much quicker to re fit it all.Bootsy wrote:Although complicated how long does it take to take down and put the roof off
One interesting point is with the roof on Porsche day not to exceed 124mph ! ... roof off if you want go flat out

Once I’ve got a few more miles under my belt I’ll post some further driving impressions... but initially it is a sorted drive , quick and chuckable . Sounds great too. It fits well with the other cars as it offers something they don’t . I like it a lot

Re: 987 Spyder
I am ... but don’t worry, took the 2.4S out yesterday and ragged the tits off it ... it’s more of a hooligan car anyway as just wants to be redlined all the time

Re: 987 Spyder
James, does your engine idle like a sewing machine 'hummm'?
Is there an unevenness to it at all? (hot or cold)

Yep, sounds like loose tappets .... noisy old thing at tick over. Gather all Direct injection 987.2 motors are like this. Tick over is smooth but rev needle does move

Re: 987 Spyder
Thanks James, going through a few problems with the 987.2, re-occurring issues.
My Boxster has never had a smooth idle and that may indicate other issues related to that.
Rattles on start-up? Yep, mine is a bit like that esp if left standing for more than a week or after the locking goes to sleep.
Mine seems to work better after an Italian Service once hot.

Re: 987 Spyder
Doesn’t rattle on start up ... it is just a tapperty noisy engine... don’t know enough about DI motors but sounds like the injectors

Re: 987 Spyder
Update time … had the car just over a year now and although my original plans were a European trip with my wife , for obvious Covid reasons this didn’t happen.
I have been enjoying it a lot though with the majority of driving done on the roads up here. Got to say, it’s a stunning looking car and great fun .

Re: 987 Spyder
Of course, there are always ‘things’ with cars..
First issue I had was one morning got to the bottom of the drive and all of a sudden there a loud screeching from the engine , fan belt loose kind of noise…. Not good !
Put the car back in the garage and took out the 964 instead
So, access to the engine in the boxster is a pita, and I knew I wanted to be at the front of the engine where the belt was. A fair bit of stripping off panels below the roof and behind the seats to get access to the engine.
It was pretty obvious what was wrong, the belt tensioner bolt had snapped …. Supposedly common in 997’s as they’re exposed to the elements but less so in 987’s. What happens is the bushing which allows rotational movement seizes and then the tensioner rotates around the bolt ultimately tightening it into the engine block and finally it snaps
You can see from above and the marks it must have been wobbling around for a while.
So , new pulley tensioner part replaced ( the damper was fine ) along with new belt. Replacement needed that torx bit modifying as space is so tight
Pita job but quite a satisfing one… especially if like me you prefer to work on the old cars
