Remember the pretty La Dawri? Despite reportedly requiring mechanical re-commissioning, wankel and mmalamut (noms de guerre?) really wanted it, slugging it out all the way to £51,500

I met Gabrielle and Uwe, the owners, several years ago and very nice people they are, too. Met them again at Essen a couple of times. Great car to own!

RHD Carrera, lightened by Lukie. I watched Caroline racing this one at Brands in its apostrophie livery when I was a youngster, then years later undergoing restoration on an open day at Roger Bray's

4-cam not included

I also watched Caroline racing the car many times - mainly at Brands Hatch - in the '80's (?) ...

Why one earth Sports Purpose called Lukie 'John da Lucas' I don't know - at least get his name right: John da Silva Lucas. Knew John very well - shared bottles of wine at lunchtime with him on various occasions, sitting out the back of Autocavan's workshop. Was honoured to be the first person to drive and feature the car after its resto, but always felt a little sad when the new owner post-resto decided he wanted to fully trim the car and turn it into just another not quite right Carrera, rather than honouring its history as a former race car. Each to their own, I guess. It seems almost inevitable that someone will buy it, stick a new four-cam in it, stamped with the 'correct' engine number, and paint it Aquamarine... Sigh.

I met John one evening picking up some parts for Ian McMath on the way home from my office in Basingstoke. A thoroughly enjoyable favour for a friend! He showed me round the 356 race car, and how he had drilled 3 holes in the head of every M8 bolt head etc throughout the car. It was a real lesson in lightness….wonderful

That's a name from the past - hadn't seen or heard any mention of Autocavan for ages until, out of the blue, I bumped into Geoff Thomas down at Goodwood when I was there for a C&SC magazine shoot in my 904 shortly before I sold it ...
