Hi all - I wondered if anyone can recommend a good spark plug tool for the plugs closest to the firewall.

I have the Hazet tool from mike at PRS and this is great for the other two.

I was wondering if anyone uses a different tool for the the trickier ones? Like a jointed wrench of some description.

Phil, I’ve never had any bother or used a specialised tool. Just a regular 14mm plug socket from a socket set, the one with a rubber ring inside to protect the porcelain.
Don't be in a rush but you might finish up stood at the side of the car contorted with your arm wedged in the gap between the engine cover and the body!
The best advice is when you put the plug back in, make sure you wind it in a good few turns by hand using just the socket to prevent cross threading!

Me too.

As above, start relaxed, and continue without getting stressed. To put plug back in, lubricate the thread and push a short piece of fuel hose over the porcelain section,hold this to steer the plug in the right direction, then twiddle this with your fingers to be certain it is running true into the hole, nip it up with the socket, not too tight. When i had my engine out, i removed the tinware to clean it and found 2 plugs in there that a previous owner had dropped and failed to recover! Good luck, W

I have always used the spark plug removal tool that was suppled in the tool roll. Around 8 inches long and has the rubber insert in the end to hold the spark plug. I did drill some extra holes in the end to take the 4 inch or so long tommy bar to tighten them I also reduced the length many years ago to ease entry of the tool for the plugs near the firewall. The job can be fiddly till you have done it quite a few times! The version that extends like the one from PRS looks fine to me sensible to have the chance to alter the length as and when you need it. Many versions are shown on Google if you enter Porsche 356 spark plug removal tool.

Thanks all. That's much appreciated. Fuel hose sounds useful in this. I have set some time aside to have a go around Christmas break and keen to be able to do this stuff myself if needs be.

I have a magnetic Hazet spark plug socket 880MGT in my tool roll with a 147mm extension #868, the 1/4 to 3/8 adaptor 858-1 and a 1/4" ratchet.
