Well worth the cost of sending it up to Mike Bainbridge near Kendal.

I took mine apart and the built it. All looked good but it still jumped out of top. There was nothing obviously wrong, until I took it to MB to fix properly. He properly ripped the pee about how I’d set it up !!
Nothing beats the years of experience.
It doesn’t jump out of top now since Mikes rebuild.
I can lend you the plate that holds the bearings with the case removed.

Agree with the above. With the high cost of parts it's doesn't make sense not to spend that extra to get it done properly. Had my box done a few years back (911 dog leg) and it's fantastic.

MB has done 3 x 915 boxes for me.
Hard to think of anyone else to use, must but be many, but, for peace of mind MB is your source imho.

Best bit of going there with the box in person is that you meet him; he is a one-man-band so you know who is actually going to do the job, and secondly he will strip the box down in alarming speed so you see all the guts and what is noticeably wrong.

My 915 from my road car was mis-behaving, and the 'in person' strip showed some horror features from previous bodges and a totally missing oil pump/cooler drive that was there when I delivered the box to the specialist before Mike.

MB restored all the cock-ups and re-instated the oil pump drive in 2 weeks to quoted cost.
If you can, take it there.

Back then he was making frequent visits to the Midlands and south to his brother's place near Bicester and we used to meet up in those journeys, that might make the hand-over easier?

Anyone care to share what an average MB gearbox rebuild bill looks like?

Reading this thread makes me think maybe I should take mine up to the lakes, seeing as it's just sitting on my garage floor at the moment. But then again, there wasn't too much wrong with it before I dropped the engine..

This was 6 years ago.............

Mike’s turnaround is brilliant and the work is fantastic, the gearbox was fully rebuilt with the faults found.

Bearing in mind if you try to do this yourself, I think there are some special tools you need.........

Gearbox repair work;
replace 1st gear dog teeth, slider for 1st/Rev, new syncro bands for 1st,2nd and 3rd gears, replace both pinion bearings and the flanged input shaft bearing, re-set the shims on the pinion shaft for the new bearing, check the diff bearing pre-load and adjust crown wheel and pinion back lash.

parts fitted;

1X gasket set
1X 1st gear dog teeth
1X 1st/rev slider
3X syncro bands
1X pinion roller bearing
1X pinion flanged bearing
1X inputshaft flanged bearing
1X input shaft lock tab
3X pinion shaft shims
1X diff bearing shim

price for parts; £1,281.51
labour ; £725
shipping ; £45
total ; £2,051.51

Thank you, I expect there's been some porsche parts inflation since then and maybe an increase in Mike's hourly rate, so I'm going to ball park it at £3k...?

My bills about5 years ago were just over the 2.2k mark, the rebuilds were extensive!
