I went to open the engine lid and the knob was gone!

I jacked the rear up in the hope the cable ran up but not

How do I get it open!

It should have a knob that screws onto the end of what you can see inside the channel.

The knob must be somewhere inside the car (under the seat cushion or under the front seat rear footwell?)

If you can try and tease the threaded end out with something small and sharp, and see if you can grab one of the screw threads. Failing that you may to put a small drill hole in the middle, without pushing it in further, then install a self tapping screw to pull the threaded bar out.

From the owner's manual :-

The emergency opening for the the rear hood lock is in the rear cross member of the frame below the hood lock.

Remove the rubber cap from below.

Move the hood latch through the emergency access to the left by means of a strong rod approx 1/4" diameter.

Alternatively, can you remove the grille and get in from the top ?

Just ended up pushing it further back and I can't find the knob

You're going in from underneath the car. Look for a rubber cap in what will be the 'floor' of the engine bay just under where the locking mechanism sits.

But again, can you remove the lid grill ? It's held in place with four screws.

I found this in car a while ago but not sure is reusable. Shouldn't it have a metal insert for the thread?

What M size is the thread?

Or is it one of these ?



Could the threaded insert have become detached and still be attached to the cable end ?

Did you have any luck with the removing of the engine lid grille ?

I haven't tried yet as I thought I would need something to attach on the end to stop it going back in again.

You are right perhaps I need to get the cable out to see if I can the insert is still there and be glued

Prolly best to get a new knob.

My original BT6 car has no hole under the release mechanism for a rod to be used in emergencies. Neil, I just checked and my release knob is like the one pictured and is threaded (no metal insert). Your knob thread just seems worn. Perhaps fill it with some JB Weld and drill and tap it to suit?

New knob installed. I had to take the grill off but not too challenging.

New muffler later this weekend.
