Faulty fuel gauge on a SC

Just finished my resto and ironed out most of the bugs.
However i have a small problem with the fuel gauge.
Turn on the ignition and the fuel gauge reacts but swings back and fore continuously as if the petrol is sloshing around in the tank. This is happening whilst the car is stationary.
Is this likely to be the gauge or the sender?

I had a similar issue with my C a while back, and I tried this test I found on the registry :
"A quick check is to remove the green wire from the sensor at the tank. The VDO instrument should then read full scale if the instrument is working and the wires are correctly landed. A further check is to ground the wire (green) at the tank , and the instrument will read nada. Blu/yel on +, grn on G for gauge on the Combination Instrument".
My gauge was fine, the sender was knackered, new sender and all good.

Tried your suggestion except on mine when i removed the green it did the opposite to yours similarly when i grounded the green wire it went the other way. Looks like the gauge is OK and the sender unit is duff on mine as well.
Anyone got one for sale or recomernend a cheap source. Car is 6 volt and it has a top mounted sender with 5 screw holes and 2 wire connection
