May sound a silly question but is it possible to remove this without taking the engine out? Car is fitted with twin Dellorto DRLA40's
I have taken the nearside one off and it is easy to get at the inside nut nearest the front of the car. You can get a ring spanner on and it is easy to start the nut by hand when reassembling. i have tried to get to the same nut on the offside and it seems nigh on impossible to get your hand in to restart it when refitting so have backed off removing it.
Cannot believe it is an engine out job so whats the secret?.

It’s easy enough with Zeniths, so must be possible. I also use 8mm nuts that are 12 as opposed to 13mm across the flats to make it easier to get a spanner or socket in. Not sure with a Dellorto but I can use a 1/4" drive socket set for the inner rear.

This is a pain in webers too.

A curved spanner can help and some people put 13mm nuts back in

Thanks for the info but i no longer need to do it. Found a very obscure fault in the nearside carbs and now resolved the problem.

Ah yes needle valves have a lot to answer for.

Stock fitment from the factory is to have a 12mm AF nut securing the carbs to the flange (on Solex 40PII) for the 8mm thread size. It makes fitting and removal easier, but they are a pain to find.

An image would be good with the Dellortos. Can a crow's foot spanner be used with a shaft on the driver?

Getting the nut off is achievable as i can just get a short spanner onto the nut. i cannot get my fingers to the nut with enough room to turn it so cannot see how i could put a loose nut back on to the stud on reassembly. That's my concern. Fortunately the problem i was having was traced to the nearside unit which is now sorted.

Even the Zeniths means that nut is hard to see and is best addressed with a small open spanner. Alternatively, a long shaft and a small ratchet. To put it back on, using a bit of BluTac in the socket.
