So for some reason the engine photo did not show just the invoice pages. Try again with the engine shot and myself driving in 2010.

Great to see that invoice for the engine rebuild Roy.

Do you know what the hourly rate was back then - I'm guessing from those labour costs it would have been ~ £1 per hour ?

Also interesting to see that in 1965 they were still using stationery that was printed in the '50's !

Your engine looks very clean - mind you I wouldn't have expected anything else ! (always a good sign in my book)

Ah yes Roy, I remember your engine invoice from when I was having my engine rebuilt a couple of years ago.

Two almost identical engine rebuilds with very similar parts list, separated by 51 years. No doubt with careful maintenance I'll get 50 years of use out of my engine too.

Yes Richard, the engine has never been apart since it was rebuilt by AFN at 110,000 miles. Its now at 131,000 miles but I know because of a speedo milage set at 118,000 when I bought it and it had not been moving the milometer reading for a year, that after checking invoices and repairing the speedo myself the actual milage now should read 137,000 or thereabouts. So the engine has about 27K on it. Touch wood, it burns no oil and has perfect response. You might say 13K miles driven is so low over 50 years!

This is correct, its why the car has only got wet once or twice since 1976/77 when I finished the first restoration and the repair work still looks as it did when I finished it. I am pedantic about rust and 356 cars. But.... don't think I have not really been driving 356 cars at all. I bought a green 356C for £275- in 1974 and drove that as a daily car for years till I received a company car so I sold it with rust for £400 thinking I had done well! Maybe 10 years ago I noticed the number 53JGN up for sale. Within a few months I saw this now red 356C up for sale and knew it was mine. I wrote to the owner and he confirmed it was previously 53JGN !! I down loaded the photos! It sold later for over £80K I believe!!

I will now finish later today with a few more photo's, its hard to choose from a wide 50 year selection!

So guys nearing the end of this current thread I must say the longest one I have been involved with!

These last series of photos concern in the first two, the great photography of Antony Fraser. He told me to drive along this quiet road in Arundel and then put on the headlamps as he in the back seat of the car driven by Steve Wright and with him hanging out of the rear window took the second shot. Only one chance for that. The next series of photos concern items I really liked working on. There is a picture of my 3 original factory supplied screw drivers. and my original tool bag.

I have also included a pic of my starter motor as reconditioned by Broadway Electrical of Grays in Essex
Tel 01375 372 782 the work carried out by Rob. You will notice the solinoid cap is now bolted on not riveted on as factory. That is because the solinoid has copper points inside and wow were they dirty. The armature and field windings and brushes all are perfect after checking. But for me after installing it I cannot tell you what the sound of a high speed turn over meant to me. For years I double checked every earth every wire so it had to be the motor. I still smile every time I start the car now hot or cold its perfect even with 6volt. I cannot speak to highly of Rob at Broadway Electrical.

The final two photos show one of my dash and the Motorola valve radio and a pic of me and my brother him on the bonnet of my dad's 1933 Riley 9 Monaco saloon in 1949 at Oxshott Woods in Surrey. I liked that car till he sold because of the Suez crisis and fuel costs. in around 1955.

I only had one station on the Motorola till I took the valve box apart a year ago. Would you believe now I have about 6 even BBC Solent.

Oxshott Woods - that brings back memories - we used to go there regularly as a family on Sunday afternoons in the late '50's where my brother & I used to go looking for/collecting lizards & newts ... 8)
