does anyone know who can form some louvres in a T5 engine lid: i'll probably try for 3 arrays, one either side of the stock grille and one in a central steel panel welded into the grille aperture

I used a company called Sports Car Metal Works in Iver, Bucks run by a guy named Mick Beakhouse to put some louvres into a spare T6 engine lid for me.

That's neat, I like that. Have you any photos of it painted and/or on the car? Curious to see what the side louvres look like with the grill in place.

I don’t think they’re a very good idea in that they’re just another way to let water in.

Careful consideration should be given to the spacing and positioning of the louvres if you want to emulate the Carrera or GT lid.

I drove my car back from Anglesey (having driven the Wild Atlantic Way on the west coast of Ireland) in torrential rain - no water entered the engine compartment.

As mentioned in the thread on my 356C, that was an oversight by me in not specifying the louvre spacing when I sent the spare engine lid to Mick Beakhouse.

In the end I didn't mind how it turned out ...

No probs when driving, but when parked or washed.

The other problem we always see with after market Louvers is that they are usually pressed outwards nicely but Porsche (Reutter) also had a tool to push the underside inwards - slightly

I do not think I have ever witnessed this except by Porsche

They also cost me a Set of Barrels and Pistons plus the rebuild cost, when I left it standing for 6 months (Plus) after water had gone down the open trumpets
Luckily it was Pushrod Motor and not the Carrera

yes, i think i'll be welding in a rain tray underneath...it's in a spare lid, so i'll do one stock and one modded.....Andy, looks like your louvres are just on the curved section, was that a problem?

One problem is regarding the shape of the engine lid which is double curved. I cut out the central section then had Home Grown Hot Rods in Southend to make a compound curved panel then punch the louvers whilst retaining the panel shape, then tigged it back onto the lid. It hasn't got anything under it but only water going upwards could get into the engine compartment. Louvers just look so cool!

just trying to work out how many louvres are needed, anyone know if Porsche found the single grille marginal on airflow.....i doubt whether they would have gone to twin grille due to looks alone....i guess i should be aiming for more aperture than a single grille allows (61000 mm2 ish)? (engine will be 1720, just normal road use)
