Last week I visited the wonderful Ben Coles and started the accumulation of the hideously expensive parts I'll need to complete this project.....whilst most items will have to wait until funds allow, the strengthened short trailing arms fitted to all RSR and 3.0RS's will be needed during the body build process......

....fabulous craftmanship as ever from Ben, shown here with a standard arm for comparison.....

Image

Image

....always great to catch up with Ben.....mad as ever, he's taken the last year off work to concentrate on building his steam engine refurbishing or remanufacturing almost every component entirely by himself......mad but very, very talented  ....

Great to hear that you are doing a proper job with the reinforcements and the trailing arms. Look forward to seeing and reading about the progress with this.

....incidentally, when doing a little research I noticed that the 45-year old original registration number for this car, RHR74M, had been taken off and put on retention so enquired through Maxted-Page if it could be purchased?....

....a cheeky ask and quite rightly my enquiry was declined.......no doubt wrong but it would have been great fun if I'd manged to secure the plate and fit it to my car!

With an unexpected drain on resources in recent months my plan was very much to put all purchases on hold and just concentrate on getting the metal and possibly paint completed this year.....

.....however sometimes opportunities come along that have to be acted on....

Image

....I was expecting to fit a reproduction 110 litre fuel tank or possibly a custom fuel cell and lucked out when a fellow enthusiast mentioned this tank which had been left behind in Kenya and then recovered having once been fitted to a car than competed in an East African Safari......I've no idea of the car it was fitted to but it has a perfect date stamp and despite its well used appearance is in great condition and will refurb perfectly once the red African dust is cleaned away....

Image

....obviously I had to try test fitting....

Image

....coming from an ex-rally car my main concern was the base although this is also in great shape.....

Image

....still a gazilion parts to acquire but at least that's one very special item ticked off my list :)

Cheers,

Nice. It’s surprising they invested that much for a plastic tank for such tiny volumes.
Cool though

Dave Buhain's set-up is often jokingly (but, deep down, seriously) referred to as 'MS Road & Rape' ...
