That's really helpful, many thanks.
I just need to do a bit of filling, sanding and choose a colour now!

Re: Flares....
In lieu of any further paint shots a quick update on my project within a project.....
....today I collected my first assembled oil cooler for a little trial fitting....
....I never set out to commission the building of reproduction oil coolers and would have happily bought something off the shelf if there was anything on the market that looked remotely like an original. I wasn't even fussy, I just wanted it to have a similar appearance, be the correct dimensions, naturally to perform to motorsport standard and hopefully resemble something that looked like these....

Re: Flares....
....well it's taken the best part of two years stumbling through getting these done but it's been an enjoyable process and I couldn't be happier with the end result
The coolers have been produced by one of the worlds leading suppliers of aviation and racing radiators, coolers and motorsport fabrication based in the UK using their chosen supplier for the oil core. A huge dose of good fortune enabled end tanks to be cast using CAD scans of original 74 RSR items meaning they are are an exact reproduction both externally and internally. The coolers are the exact shape and dimensions of originals and pressure tested to motorsports standards. Again I was fortunate to obtain all dimensions of an original relief valve and these are an exact reproduction with the spring manufactured with the same wire thickness and number of coils etc so it works exactly as it should.......10 coolers are being produced and once finished they'll be coated in an Aluchrom 407 protective finish which will give them a greenish NOS appearance....

Re: Flares....
....sadly all hidden when the bumper and grill is fitted but nice knowing it's there and working as it should
Of course it's impossible to get a correct grill so I made Mr Carter a mould of the grill opening....
....and sent him a pic.....
....actually that's the wrong mesh but you get the idea!
Cheers,

Re: Flares....
Awesome job Darren! Gotta love such incredible attention to detail and desire to get these legendary parts exactly right!
On another similar matter, we need to have another chat about our Heinzmann extinguishers as I’ve drawn a blank with Lifeline (but will try them again).

Re: Flares....
If it was my cooler ............. I would want some (very minor possibly) flexibility in it's mountings (ie - NOT bolted up tight - metal to metal)
Don't be telling me "that's the way the factory did it" or anything like that .... it IS possible to do better !!!
Me likes the car and the colour.

Excellent research/attention to detail/outcome Darren !
A lot of time/work invested - &, as you stated, largely unseen once installed - but immensely satisfying (for you) & the sort of detail that will make your car stand out from the 'also rans' ...

Re: Flares....
Surprised the factory would have not used rubber mountings.

Re: Flares....
Fabulous job of the oil cooler. This is the kind of craftsmanship that sets a car apart from all the others.

Seriously impressive! Now we need to find someone who will do something similar and produce a limited run of Heinzmanns!
