1971 911T won’t start
Hi wondered if anyone have any ideas, recent purchase of this. RHD 71 T, I have a spark, however replaced distrubor cap, rotor arm and coil, I have fuel going into the carbs. The car as sat in storage over winter and I have started it a couple of times. Now engine turns over but does not fire.
The other question I have is did some 911T`s come without a CDI box, as mine just as a Lucas voltage regulator bolted onto a plate that clearly as space and what looks to be fixings for a CDI box.
Thanks Roy

Stale fuel ?
Modern fuel seems to go 'off' in a fairly short time - a matter of weeks can have a marked effect.
I would get a can of fresh fuel & try starting it directly from that.
Alternatively, try spraying some Easy Start (or similar) into the carbs & see if that does the trick.

Re: 1971 911T won’t start
Andy thanks for the quick reply, I did take off the air filter and spray easystart into the six venturi`s, but apart from the odd bang and flash from one, nothing. But I do have a gut feeling it’s something to do with fuel, the carbs look as though they have had a refurb in the not to distance past, but before me the car had in storage for some and I suspect not ran.
Re: 1971 911T won’t start
I started mine a couple of times in the garage last year to keep it ticking over and then it wouldn't start. I spent a lot of time checking and rechecking everything, including the spark on the plugs. However, clearly the plugs were fouled, despite a weak spark. I changed the plugs and she started first time.

At ‘71 I’d expect to see a CDI.
If the coil is a CDI one and you are using it with a Kettering type setup you will get a spark, but a weak one. With poor fuel it certainly won’t help. Check the coil part no’s.

Re: 1971 911T won’t start
I will change the plugs, a new set won’t do any harm, the distributor is Bosch with a rotor I hadn’t come across before and fairly expensive, the coil is also Bosch. But I do think sometime in its life, it had. CDI box. So am I right in thinking without one it will run but with a weak spark.
The problem is apart from taking it off the trailer towards the end of last year I never driven it, and with rebuilding the garage, together with the weather, it’s stood in the storage.

Your car defintely had a CDI box when new. There will be three holes in the 'relay panel' where it used to sit.
Yes, you can 'jury rig' a 911 to run without a CDI in a traditional Kettering inductive arrangement but it won't be great, especially, as Tim says, if the CDI coil is retained. CDI coils are black and shorter in length than the blue or red Bosch coils used on non CDI cars.

I am no expert but seeing as you replaced distributor cap etc, make sure orientation and cables are reconnected in corrected order.
Cheers

Well changed the plugs sadly still won’t start, so Monday off to a specialist.
Update when they have seen it.

Re: 1971 911T won’t start update
Took 911t into zuffenhause porsche, had a phone call, their engine man sorted it out basically flooding and the car had sat around a long time. So off to pick it up them for some driving.
Thanks to all who tried to help.

Zuffenhaus is a good indie, sorted my Boxster where others failed.
