Timesert or helicoil...?
I need to repair a damaged 7/16 UNC thread on the cast steel differential on the E Type
The female thread has stripped
It's to hold one of the rear brake callipers...each of which which has 2 bolts
Timesert seems to be a lot more expensive but I want to do the job properly
Thoughts please
Thanks
Jonathan

Re: Timesert or helicoil...?
Depends how much material you have to work with, timeserts and much thicker than a helicoil, helcoils are perfectly fine and just as strong as the original thread would have been.

Re: Timesert or helicoil...?
We sometimes use helicoils to repair damaged seat belt threads and they prove to be a least as strong as originals when we pull test them. As long as you can get a good clean thread for the helicoil to sit it it will be fine.

Re: Timesert or helicoil...?
You will need the complete Timesert Kit plus the correct insert (Size, Thread Type and length) so this will not be a cheap fix
You are probably better to get someone to do it for you
As far as I am aware - Wurth is the only supplier in the UK but I have bought direct from Mechanics Tools and Bits [info@mechanicstoolsandbits.com] in the USA

Re: Timesert or helicoil...?
A standard Timesert and a Helicoil use the same drill and STI Tap size to prepare the damaged thread.
You can insert a Timesert with a cap headed bolt as the end threads of the insert are slightly undersized to allow them to be inserted.
The main difference between a Timesert and a Helicoil is simply that the Timesert is deigned to fit into a counterbore and has a shoulder that is slightly larger in diameter than the OD of the thread.
The special drill supplied by the kit produces a counterbore that is much larger in diameter than the size of the insert and if you have access to the correct 'slot drill' then you can significantly reduce the counterbore diameter and just use the same drill and tap as a Helicoil.
The Diff Housing on an E Type (4HU TYpe) is generally Cast Iron hence the the use of a UNC thread.
If you have sufficient space I would be inclined to use an E-ZLOK insert as the increase in diameter will produce a strong arrangement and they are very straightforward to install.

Re: Timesert or helicoil...?
I would use a helicoil.
We make Magnesium differential cases for e types, Ac cobras and listers. We fit helicoils to all the stressed threads from new.
Not yet had a problem and they get raced pretty hard.
