I am slowly trying to get my 914 back on the road.
After months of fettling with the engine to get it run properly, I thought I would reward it with some more love and overhaul the brakes.

Whilst disassembling the fronts I realised one of the 3" spacing lock plates was missing.
I've managed to source all the other parts I need but can't seem to find any source of the lock plates in the UK or EU.

Anyone know where I can buy them separately or anyone got one ( or two ) spare?

That is the piston plate that holds piston at the correct angle - I have managed to source a rebuild kit that has a set of those in.

The plate I need is the one that you get in the more comprehensive kits, and is the zinc plated plate shown at the bottom of the picture here.

It is the plate for securing the caliper bolts in place.

I can only find them for sale in the US as part of rebuild kits, which is a bit of an expensive way of getting one.
Obviously I like to buy them separately and from the UK if possible.
I bought some VW 311 ones from the UK as I was told they would fit but the VW311 caliper has a smaller pitch.

I know the part you mean - i'm almost sure i havent got any of those but will have a look.

Have you tried porsche? Part number is 411 615 291 so that's a vw part number I think so you might have some joy with a classic vw specialist in the UK?

The front brake calipers for the 914-4 are VW 411 items. There were two versions fitted: 70-72 with one bleed nipple and sided: 73-76 with two bleed nipples and were not sided.
The locking plate and piston plate use to come in the rebuild kit.
The rebuild kit for the early (411 698 471) and late (411 698 471 A) are not the same.
In recent years the rebuild kits have fewer items in them and vary from manufacture to manufacture. FTE kits are the best as they have all the parts and the Porsche kits use to have all the parts too.



Often when the locking plate tab is bent away from the screw it breaks off as many people bend it back too far; so finding a good usable second hand one with both tabs in tacked is very hard to find and Porsche haven’t for many years sold the lock plate.

Buying from the US might be the only way for you to get a new one! Or buy a FTE rebuild kit!

Mines a '73 with the non handed calipers.

I have ordered an FTE set from the States - so another delay.

I am also struggling to buy the brake pad fitting kit - have bought a couple that are listed as compatible but the spring clips are not the correct size and the pins are too short.

Can't seem to find them at the usual places inc Rosepassion, or even on ebay.de.

Again any pointers?

Have you tried Brakeparts International - they list the spring clips - not sure if they are the correct size though

Update - I got the fitting kit from Brakeparts but looks to be the same kit I bought elsewhere - definitely not the right size.



The pins seem too short and the clips are definitely not wise enough.

The first kit I bought was branded Brembo but looks identical.

My FTE caliper repair kits have arrived from the States, so I now have the caliper lock plate (and the rest of the kit that I had already sourced elsewhere).


I also ordered a random brake fitting kit off of eBay as it looked like it might fit (Audi 80, 1975-).


The clips look good but the pins are the wrong length.

I then finally found a genuine NOS VW 411 fitting kit in the States so I am awaiting delivery of that to decide which way to go.
Hopefully I will then have everything I need to finally finish this job! ( apart from some spare time )

I finally got all the parts I need to complete the job.



I have also fitted new Sebro rotors, wheel bearings and flexible brake lines.



Once side fitted, one to go and then time to bleed the brakes.

Did you buy a set from vw heritage?

I've seen a set of the pad fitting kit under the type 3 model using ate calipers. Pins look shorter without the point on the end but I just need the plates as my pins are fine

no I didn't buy the kit from VW Heritage I bought it from the States in the end.

I had bought a set of VW Type 3 lock plates from Machine7, but they were the wrong size.

The front caliper rebuild kit I can see on the VW Heritage website looks like it has the correct lock plate but I can't see any brake pad pins in that kit.

It is worth noting the ones from the States is for two pairs.
