Through bonnet fuel filler

Post by chief »

Hi everyone,
Has anyone on here fitted a through the bonnet fuel filler???
If so can you show me some pictures or give me the heads up as to how you modified the tank and expansion tank. I purchased a 113mm RS style setup and I'm gonna have to drill a bloomin big hole which will mean so serious surgery!
Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated....

As far as I know Wayne and Andrew Mallagh have through bonnet fillers.

There is something on one of the 356 hotrod replica build threads about using lasers to get it in the right place

Lasers looks like a good option. Or just stand back, squint one eye, stick the kettle on and repeat for 3 weeks before cutting.....thats what I did :)

Hi Jury,
That is what I have spent the long weekend doing!
I need a push over the edge.....

I more wandered what people had done to the fuel tank more than the hole in the bonnet to be honest.
The expansion tank is right in the way. My thoughts were to cut a circle out in the tank, then modify the expansion tank around that :?
A picture of what others have done would be a big bonus!

Thank you fellas, all very helpful. As I want to use the original fuel tank, I think a fare bit of welding will be needed :confused2:

Are you buying a new tank? I'd recommend it rather than weld an old one - if you must weld an old one then I believe you should fill it with water first

Sladey,
Tank has been out for a week now so no fumes left...
Tank is a new condition apart from all the Californian sand in the bottom!

Not sure how to squeeze this into that :?

I would be amazed if any sensible metal worker would go near that with something hot until it's been empty and venting for ........months ? ...... more .......? A week is nothing. Fill it with water and stay nervous.

I'll be doing the same one day so let us know how you get on :blob6:

Or run a pipe from another car's exhaust into the tank while welding – the exhaust fumes purge any fuel vapours.

Allegedly.

Water sounds a bit easier - you might not explode with the exhaust fumes but you could fall asleep and never wake up

Either way don't risk it with the tank
