Before I wade in with any tools, how does the chrome trim under the rear quarter-lights attach? I slid a scraper under and could feel several pins or bolts going down into the rear quarter. Are these just spring clips and just prise up the trim or are these bolts etc I need to undo from beneath?

Not sure what YM car you have but early indicator surrounds where part and parcel of the lamp unit and not detachable.

Come to think of it - are you talking about the quarter window or light housing? If it is the window then the integral pins are held in place by small rubber speednuts and the chrome strip can be prised off. There will likely be sealant under the chrome strip so take it slowly and carefully.

67, and yes, quarter light as in window No sealant so it sounds like I need to prise them up with a very wide scraper

A little nut on the underside of the trim I think. Get to it from under the wheel arch. Will have most likely disappeared under years of muck.

The later ones have self tappers.

John is right - for cars up to 68 (I think) the trim is held on with 'speed nuts' - small circular clips that just crimp onto the pin. Crushing them with pliers from under the wheel arch will get them off. Don't try to prise up the trim until you've got them off unless you plan on replacing the trim. They look flimsy but they hang on for grim death!

Anybody got some advice on fitting the new Quarterlight seal, cannot seem to get it to go in frame so I have a loose fit that is unsightly and not a great seal as I discovered over the holidays.

If I cant make the seal fit I will have to fit a "Bilge Pump"

You need the assistance of the expert in this field - Mr. Percy Veerance.
From my (albeit limited) experience this is the most difficult part of all Porsche restoration tasks...... assuming you are referring to the seal that goes around the outside edge of the opening rear quarterlight window.

First of all you need a Porsche seal, ideally the one you took off, or a new replacement.
Then put it into a bucket of hot water with a dab of washing up liquid.
While it's warming take a detailed look at the seal profile and try to figure out which is the bit you have to get rammed into the slot in the outer edge of the frame. Not as easy as it sounds.
Once you've sorted this, and the seal is nice and warm and supple get a couple of blunt screwdrivers, or a knife blade that you've taken the edge off (so as you press the rubber into the slot it doesn't cut into the rubber)
Then set aside a couple of hours in a sound-proof room, with nothing breakable, or valuable, or both, within range of the screwdrivers/knife and get on with it.
Personally I start at one of the corners, then go around the loop, leaving the vertical til last. The bit where the opening clasp fits is the most fun.

I agree with Mick, this is the worst job in Porsche restoration work, although with practice you MAY get it down to 10 minutes per side. I use brake cleaner rather than washing up liquid and a blunt screwdriver.

Thanks Guys, bitter sweet, that's sort of what I've done, will have another go. In the meantime its a bilge pump or leave them as they are fitting like a pair of your big brothers pants.

ok, as this thread has morphed a little, I am stuck with one last bit. How do I remove the steering column shroud? Front section removed along with stalks etc, 2 front clamp bolts slackened and rear clamp loosened too so it rotates freely. So the shroud rocks freely, moves in and out by about 1mm, but doesn't come off, feels like there is a locking pin somewhere.

There is. There's a locking ring with an Allen headed screw that you need to un-do. It's close to the dash. Once it is loose it can be rotated slightly to reveal a cylindrical pin that holds the shroud in place - you can pull it out with some long-nosed pliers. I test worthy of Mensa!

Seeing as I am on a roll, how about removal of the trip counter reset knurled knob / cable
