Dear Friends,

My 912 seems to have an electrical fault! Whilst driving along the car has developed a tendency to jolt and seems to short the red generator light comes on then goes off. If I put too much load on the electrics like radio, lights or operator indicator it does the same thing. A short somewhere??

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Regards

Max (womble912)

Regulator and Dynamo issues

Check the output of these item in accordance with the manual. Check the brushes are not worn down

This may not be a electric problem! First check that your fan belt isn't slipping. Next take the 3 wires off the top of the dyno, clean them and replace since they may be lose. Next check all the wires are tight on the regulator. Silver box attached to the side of the engine bay. Next as someone said check your brushes. You have to remove the black band at the rear of the generator. Then look inside and you will see a black carbon brush being pushed onto the shinny metal commutator (I think that I've spelt that incorrect), that spins, in the middle. Check that the springs are pushing the brushes (one at the top you can see and one at the bottom) and they are contacting the commutator and the commutator is shinny. If not clean with a carbon fibre brush.

I'm in town on Saturday so if you want to pop over to Crystal Palace in the morning (might have to leave somewhat early). I happen to look at it with you.
