Now I know this sounds a daft question but how do I change the oil on my '67MY 911S?!
I guess I drain the crankcase and oil tank, but do I need to remove the 'sump plate' & clean this area (as I would on a VW engine?)
What is the refill capacity?

12ltrs with

Remove oil tank plug, drain, replace plug with new washer.
Remove sump plug, drain, replace with new washer.
Remove filter and replace with new Porsche OEM filter.

Should be no need to take of the sump plate, but that would depend on how much cr*p there is on your sump plug

I removed the sump plate and cleaned the small bits of carbon out of the bottom!

Don't forget to buy two new sump plate gaskets as well as new sealing rings for the tank and sump drain plug and allow for around 9 litres of oil (according to Clymer's publication).

A word of warning, the oil tank holds a lot of oil and when you take out the plug be prepared with a large container or you'll end up like me with lots of oil EVERYWHERE

My 72 2.4 doesn't even have a sump plug You have to take the sump plate off to get the oil out.

Any ideas why Porsche made it like this, it just makes a messy process even worse?

I've found that even with the oil tank empty and the sump plate off there is still a good litre or so of oil lurking around inside the engine. I think you have to turn the car on it's side and shake to get it all out!

sounds like someone upgraded your oil pump and put the later sump plate on Gary, hence no drain

If you don't have a sump plug then you probably have a later oil pump fitted which does not have a sump plug and as you say the hole sump needs taking off.

Luke, Alan, Very interesting. I've got no history on the car so this may well be the case. When you say 'later' what are we talking?

The change to a sump plate with no sump plug was made in
1983, basically the change to a newer style oil pump incorporated an intergrated strainer screen. You can buy a new sump plate for this type which has a sump plug fitted.
