You need to carry a torch in the car at all times and usually the time you need it the batteries have gone flat!

Picked up this vintage Hella hand held spot light to carry in the car. Fitted an LED lamp and it works a treat.

Thought this may be of interest to other early Boxster or 996 owners

Mentioned the other day the 986 Stereo seemed to have blown

Actually it was a speaker that had blown but decided to upgrade it all a little but keeping the factory look

So first a new Bluetooth and Tuner from Blaupunkt. The Madrid 200BT

Nicely featured with a decent output and blends well with the dash - usb port can be used to pop media into it or as in my case a simple power output for phone charging

Image
Will delete the CD holder underneath as no need for that anymore!

Then to the speakers - if your 986 didn’t come with the upgraded Bose system the speakers are crap

So purchased this kit which includes Alpine 2 way speakers and some adapter plates, wiring adapters etc so you can use the factory grilles and wiring

Image

Instructions are clear and it’s a quick job to get the new speakers mounted onto the old grilles

Image

All installed and sounding much better than before

Got the speaker kit from these guys - very quick service

Those speaker panels look great.
I don't mind the standard equipment in the 987, I had the Bose in the 996 and never really been a fan of its sound, though getting music through a 3.5mm jack is a pain when your phone doesn't have one..

After upping all the 911s lights to LEDs I felt bad for the Boxster and its next to useless headlights so put some H7 LEDs in at lunchtime (thought I'd see how they went before springing for the H11 full beams). Went in no probs and no dash errors

If you have the Bose you have to turn the bass down about 4 ticks, unless you like people to hear you coming from ten blocks away.

Refitted ecu and IT STARTED! Woohoo! :bounce:

Swapped mirrors for correct 914 type in place of horrid Vitaloni plastic things...

Laid on some stripes to check out how it looks. :)

How that looks .... is bloody lovely!!

On those mirrors (if they're the ones in thinking of) it was almost as if at some point in time they became very fashionable on 914s

Nice. I must go check my 914 starts at some point too!

Seeing stripes on the car reminds me, Keith: did you ever do anything with the stripes you had from me at Hedingham?

Went and saw the painter.....

He had removed all the old paint, 3 layers with filler on top of paint etc and then epoxy resined it. He had nearly half a carrier bag of dust from it.

Not sure what the previous paint guy was upto, but it was all from him. He must have spent hours getting that much filler on it!

Collected car from Steve Kerti's workshop. It started from stone cold first turn of the key. Not done that for many months. Drove the car 95 miles home and loved every minute (apart from white windscreen, no washers and setting sun...).

Setting up headlight LEDs.

Had some fixed Novasight ones previously which looking back were just fine thanks very much... but then in the LED fest that started with James' "got some rear LEDs" thought I could optimise...

The Classic Car LEDs ones are definitely good but some more fiddling will be needed.

In more water cooled news, despite project Tip still looking like this

Image
And parts everywhere (x2 fabric roofs, and closing panel, bumper and a bunch of other nonsense) I made the mistake of entering some events for this year, so my winter ideas had to get out of my head and into practice

They have done 7 years of competition so due a rebuild, the front legs basically need stripping in situ to avoid stripping brake lines

Image

And both off - rears to go

Image
I will hopefully have an air cooled MOT to report next week
