Modern Classic radio for a 73T?

Post by 911hillclimber »

In my quest to soften-off my ex hillclimb 911 and expecting to fit a bog standard silencer soon, a radio might be worth fitting over the normal din of the car.
Might help me to persuade the wife to take us to SPA in the 911 this year...

Question:

Is there a straight forward radio that will fit the dash, look classic and be easy to install on the market?

I will not fit a glowing blue widget iPlayer wizzbang thing, just want Radio 2!

Options please! :cyclops:

Thanks, Graham.

iPod loaded with R2 podcasts through earphones. I don't think you'll ever hear much of the wireless in a old 911 at the best of times, let alone on a Belgian motorway!

It's really not worth the effort Graham, I've got plenty of extra soundproofing in my car and it's still barely audible over the din!

I feed the output of my phone into the back of the original spec Blaupunkt, a separate amp would probably help.

I don't have an aerial as I didn't want to drill a hole in the car.

There are a few places modding classic radios with modern features which might suit you (sir) http://www.classiccarstereo.co.uk/class ... audio.html here for example, I have no previous with this company just the first one on google. Looks interesting.

Porsche also do classic looking modern radios, quite whizz

Thanks Gary, my 3.2 is a bit quieter than a 2.4, but I do take your point.
No rush on the wheels, in your own time

I found a 'vintage' Becker on ebay. It wasn't expensive - I think around £100- - and it has FM as well as Long and Medium Wave. It also has a DIN socket in the back that I can use to play an iPod through.

Its not quite period correct but looks ok, although as others have said an old 911 cockpit isn't a great place to listen to music - using ear buds with my iPod is much quieter! If you're interested I have a Blaupunkt Munster which does the same thing.

There are also these sorts of things around: http://www.classiccarstereo.co.uk as well as clever people who make an old unit work like a new one (at a price):

Interesting!
I had looked at that site before posting.
Seems to be a rarefied market as I could find little to choose from.

I'm not after BOSE quality, just something to kill long journey boredom, road reports etc.

My plan was a new complete unit with speaker(s) not a re-worked real radio.
