Original radio in my 1970 911T (LHD USA car)

Post by Roygarth »

Hi Brains Trust!

Would this Becker Europa have been OE

Thanks

Yes, looks correct. Could also be a Blaupunkt Frankfurt.

According to the book 911 & 912 A Restorer's Guide to Authenticity, the Becker Europa (US Band) was OE for 1965-1969. In 1970 (which I see you list as the year of your car), the only Becker model listed is Grand Prix.

Other options for 1970 were Philips AM/LW cassette or the following Blaupunkt models - Hamburg, Boston, Frankfurt, Koln and New Yorker.

I can't say for certain the list is correct in the book but given it lists the radios by year it looks pretty comprehensive so a reasonable chance it is right.

Graeme

Although I agree completely with Graeme above, sometimes the radios were added by the dealer at the point of sale (unless you COA has it listed). This may mean whatever they had in stock at that time would be fitted.
I also have a 1970 LHD T and will be fitting a Blaupunkt Frankfurt with a new double speaker to replace the large oval one.

Thanks Guys....do you have a pic of the Frankfurt as I'm getting quite a few different designs on Google?

I'm fitting a Becker Europa to my 1970 too, but it only has mono speaker output (Which i have been looking for anyway) so i have to use the oval speaker in the dashboard, in any case i think it will feel more original if the speaker in the dashboard is in use rather than cut horrid holes in the door cards. Besides that of course it's got loads of chrome on it and it looks the dogs when fitted.

Here's the one that's going into my 70/71

From memory this is a 68-69, but as per the point above, the dealers fitted what they had, meaning that it is very possible to have a radio that was a couple of years old.

I'm happy with it anyway :-)

I have a Becker Mexico radio cassette which strictly speaking is for 72/73 but will sell if it's of any interest. This was one of the top of the range options for the RS.

Like you I don't want speakers in the door cards, so I'm fitting this double speaker which fits in the oval dash space. Im hoping it will make a better sound than the original one!

This is from an untouched 1970 T

Jos where do you get that speaker from?

A very timely thread. I am not sure I would hear a radio much in my S, but, might be nice to have assuming I can buy the right one.

mind you, where does an aerial go and does it need a hole in a panel? If so not gonna do it. Maybe someone like maplin can do a decent hidden aerial these days. Will have a look.
