My latest Ferrari.

Ferrari's model designation always used to be the capacity of a single cylinder from what I remember. When did things change (which they clearly did)? And then there's the 400, which doesn't fit anywhere! Four-litre, no cylinders?

I think the old system only applied to the 12-cylinder cars & changed with the introduction of the V8-engined models - the last models to use the old 'designation' were the 365 models ending in ~ 1974.

Bit of a side track but it's interesting how differently Porsche and Ferrari approach naming things these days. Porsche still uses the same naming conventions it has from the beginning (e.g. 9xx type number, "Carrera", S, GT, GTS etc). Ferrari on the other hand is all over the place (e.g. 599, F12, 458, La Ferrari?!). Why did Ferrari drop their single cylinder capacity names - anyone know? You'd think some cynical Fiat marketing man would have thought about bringing it back.

Great thread Mike and great cars. I was surprised how good the red one was. And very usable. I got stuck in a traffic jam on the M25 in the rain with the wipers on once and thought the thing would overheat or catch fire or both - but it did neither, and as the traffic and the weather cleared we roared off none the worse for it. Tremendous!

We're not going to get to over a hundred pages without sight of a finished car are we?.....

that was IIRC because Ferrari's were V12, and the 206/246 and 308 GTB4 were "dino's". Back then, a totally different brand within the marque. These days, pffff, what's in a name.

Anyway, looking forward to the visual stuff.

Hi Bert great to hear from you, and a really good question as this was one of my biggest worries!

As I mentioned before the 246GT is one of the most beautiful cars ever, but one of the drawbacks for me at 6'2" was it's a little on
the small side in the cabin, head room was just ok but minimal leg room. It's the classic Italianate driving position, the long arms
short legs problem so your knees are wrapped around the steering wheel.

I hadn't sat in a 308 before I starting looking but I had tried a Boxer and that was really bad, head literally was jammed against the
roof and the length of that flat 12 lump meant the rear bulkhead was pushed forward so no legroom again. I'd also been lucky
enough to try a 250 SWB, just to sit in, and what a disappointment that was, here was my dream car practically un-drivable for me
as the front bulkhead is so close to the steering wheel, I couldn't actually use the pedals!

The good news is that the GTB is amazingly roomy inside the cabin. Plenty of headroom for what looks like a low car and the leg
room is fine. It's so good in fact that with the pedals properly adjusted it's the first car I've ever been really able to heel and toe in.
