Acid dip or media blast?
Hi
Not sure what's the best way for removing rust, underseal filler etc
Dipping like SPL or media blasting?
Has anybody used SPL?
Benefits and downsides of both from any experience would be very appreciated
Thanks Ray

I've sent you a PM about SPL...
Enviro-strip is the place to go http://www.envirostripukltd.com
Seen fantastic results with 911 shells from these people, who are also the most helpful people around. Good value, too...

Re: Acid dip or media blast?
You're looking at around £850 for the shell I believe...
Re: Acid dip or media blast?
That's handy to know - they are just up the road from me - will have to pay them a visit when my car is fully stripped.KS wrote: Enviro-strip is the place to go http://www.envirostripukltd.com

I assume the etch primer is spray applied - so all the hidden voids would need to be treated separately.

Shell collected today by Alan the owner.
A nicer man you will never meet!
I decided to pay for collection and delivery, we agreed a time and Alan rang me half an hour before the agreed time and arrived spot on.
Covered trailer with winched jig Easy and safe loading
Alan was very knowledgeable and detailed the process. The car will be delivered back to me on the 8th of October and Alan will take some video of the car going through the process also.
So far so very good. I will post again on return

Really interested to know how you get along.
Still not clear what the advantages/disadvantages with dipping over blasting.

Re: Acid dip or media blast?
This is a very contentious area for some people.
I recently carried out a restoration ( not finished yet) on a 1965 912 . I spent many weeks in the evenings looking at various methods of paint and rust removal. I liked the dip strip idea but was concerned about trapped chemicals. I looked at soda blast, this will remove the paint but not rust so still has to be blasted and concerns about soda residues left after the process.
Shot blast can be very good, I have heard horror stories. If I were doing it I would be hyper careful but not everyone is.
I eventually chose heat ashing. A company in Halifax called BeadBlast have a large oven which they can ash off everything from the body. They have processed many classic cars. Heat Ramped up ,held, cooled in a programmed process to stop distortion and let off all the volatiles from underseal etc.
Then very light fine Al Oxide blast to remove any rust and then etch prime paint to stop flash rusting.
I documented it on my renovation site http://www.912renew.com
I was exceptionally pleased with the results. Exceptionally. Looked horrendous after ashing but like an air fix kit after etch prime
912s are still reasonably priced and I wanted to keep a lid on renovation costs. If it had been a 911s I would probably have gone for chemical strip and galvanised treatment .
Cheers
Dave
