Finally got around to sorting a tool kit….inspiration came from a genuine hardly touched kit from a car with a build date very close to mine…

Image

I couldn't justify the huge cost of going completely original for what is largely ornamentation however with a mixture of lookalikes and a couple of genuine items the tool kit looks pretty reasonable and has all the 'right' items…..

Image

I just need to switch the screwdriver for a red handled type……anyone know when they switched from separate phillips and slot drivers to a reversible type?

Cheers,

Now, if that's not a question for Mike B I don't know what is.

I gave Darren a full response as I had missed this and he pm'ed me.

The general consensus is that an accurate cut off date can't be pinpointed. Toolkits were stockpiled at the factory and also by dealers and the kit a car was delivered to a new owner with is considered 'original' to that car but they were mixed up, swopped over, added at first service etc etc from what was currently top of the pile on the shelf. Like all loose 'accessories' anything could have ended up in any car at any time, factory, dealer, later..... So what 'should' be in a car as 'correct' for any built date gets muddled between late 72 and mid 73 (calendar dates).

What is known is that both types were available during 72/73 and gradually over that MY the reversible screwdriver became predominant over the two separate drivers. Other changes occurred too, the plug spanner, the spanners themselves etc.

Regards
Mike

Red handled screwdrivers sourced and toolkit complete :) ….

Image

…and all put together for about £150, which considering the two genuine items cost me £95 alone is pretty good going!

I can feel the throb of Mikes disapproval from 400 miles away!

I had to get my daughter from Cricklade to Cheltenham for 7 o'clock this morning. On the way back I took in a short stretch of the A436 from Seven Springs to the Air Balloon, part of a route I often drive. It's only a short stretch of road of about 3½ miles but it twists and turns, rises and dips and has recently been resurfaced, it's a joy to drive….

….it had me itching to drive it again in a proper car! :)

Straight back home I took the E out of the garage and headed back, this time taking the A435 old Cheltenham road, another fantastic stretch of tarmac if you can catch it early without any traffic….

Image

Image

What a glorious morning; although a little slick, the road was clear and with the sun waking, the light streamed through the semi-naked trees slowly holding on to their beautiful autumnal colours showing the mist gently rising from the frozen meadows beyond……with JTP's beautifully recovered 380mm wheel dancing in my hands and the flat six screaming out the soundtrack, the sight, sound and feel was a surreal experience…wish I could have recorded it!

Image

Also found out I have a little light on my temp gauge that warns of icy roads, cool...

Image

When I reached Seven Springs I went back and forth a few times to the Air Balloon, it's funny, earlier in the BMW I marvelled at how good a stretch of road this is, I didn't notice the car. Now in the 911 the road became nothing more than a fine canvas to grace the work of art that glided above it 8) …..these early cars are immense. I enjoyed myself for a good while until the traffic built up and had me heading for home….

Image

The E is such a pretty car it loves posing for the camera, these being taking on my new iPhone (sorry Rich), quite impressed...

Image

I feel I must have been a very good person in a previous life to be so blessed in this one…..guess I'd better get doing a bit more good in this one to keep the run going!

Oh Happy Days :)

:) These little drives can sometimes reward as much as the big road trips. Currently my car is disabled having the wheels done so I couldn't take advantage of the wonderful morning here.

I went for a walk instead :(

Nice photos :)

Those early morning drives, when you are actually driving for a reason too, are my favorite 8)

Car is looking good Darren, bet it's driving lovely now you've gained 15bhp and I imagine smoother delivery too

The nice morning is wasted on me, I was walking around brough market in London nibbling on freebies ( and enjoying London for once ! )

Not jealous at all Darren. I've done some awesome driving so far this weekend

Took daughter to singing lesson last night
Picked daughter up from singing
Then took daughter to school disco
Picked daughter up later from disco
This morning took daughter to ballet lesson
Picked daughter up later from ballet and then went and did a weekly shop at Tescos - rock and roll
The thrills don't stop tomorrow. Take daughter to Pantomime rehearsals, pick her up for lunch and then take her back again and pick her up later.

See, makes your sublime drive seem almost trivial.

Thomas, green with envy of your drive and pics!

I sympathise Thomas, my poor wife goes into the office 3 times a week, an 8 miles journey, yet still racks up 20K miles a year running our two daughters around……..I do like to help out when I can!

Tough day for me, early morning jaunt to Cheltenham, stretched the legs of the 9ll, a trek up to London followed by a mad dash back to meet friends in the Pub this evening…damned hard work! - Weather's looking good so might have to go again in the morning :)

Hope you and the family had a good day in London James, I did….2-0 :)

Very well thanks Feroz, hope you're well too….remember me when you next head into Wales, I've a few more horses now so hopefully you won't have to hold back as much and at least I'll be able to show you the scenic way there!

Cheers,
