Headed out with the E to the Wye Valley this morning for an RAC magazine photo shoot….





…the miserable weather couldn't have helped the photographer Chris Winter…..apparently the article is a comparison of 911's old and new….not sure it's fair to compare my car against the 3.8RS belonging to Fergus….



…after all, there's only so many gorgeous early 2.4E's to go around! …

….here's one for Thomas…



…a dull dreary day although I expect Chris'll do a better job with his snaps….some great roads around this area and an enjoyable drive out, must head back when the sun's shining…

Not mine I'm afraid Mike……my car will only get trailered when it's broke!

The shuttle belongs to Fergus who uses it to transport his Caterham which he races….a really cool guy although needs a little education regarding the 911 of choice!

The car was called into wedding service at the weekend….....there's not many adornments that can improve the look of an early 911 however these two certainly add a bit of sparkle!….

The young man does have 32 years on me although I hope it's a fair few years before either my 15 and 16 year old daughters make me a Granddad!

A few little projects……..

….I listed out the following items I'd like to add/improve/change…..

380mm Steering Wheel
Refurb horn push pad
Vintage RS Sports Seats with smooth vinyl bolsters and houndstooth inserts
Remove paint from back of door hinges and re-gap
New door seals (once Alan has produced the correct type, pending)
Mod to steering rack under tray (for 85 litre tank)
Covers for seat belt retractors
Refurb seat belt receivers
New top door pads
New door armrests and handles
New dash knee pads
New rear engine lid grill, 911E badge and Porsche script
Refurb front indicator units (never did get around to these)
Source rear seat bases (covers already trimmed and waiting to fit, current set borrowed)
Source/fit correct rear view mirror
Obtain one (yes, one short) correct screw for rear quarter hinge brackets

….nothing urgent, just a little to-do/wish list to get on with as and when time and funds allow …..

My little jaunt to Essen not only secured me fuel and oil tanks for the Mongrel, it also allowed me to indulge a little on the E……



I've found myself being a little contrary with my restoration……on one hand I wanted it to look 'new' and therefore fitted a 'new' Porsche bonnet badge rather than the nice 'used' original that I have…on the other I've kept scratched side and rear glass as they have original markings and stickers that are part of the cars history! ……I might step back and fit the original badge too, it does look better after all, especially as the car is now carrying a few stone chips as testament that it's being used!

As to interior, there's are a couple of items that have bugged me from day one!……I've no issue with a touch of patina inside the car, I like a little wear and tear and actually prefer the look, however I think everything needs to be consistent one way or the other…...'new' or 'used'.…...my car came without any interior as such so it was always going to be completely re-trimmed and look 'new'…..except that is for the door armrests and handles (the best I could find) and the door top pads which had to be recovered….just plain wrong for a 73!

The answer would have been to find perfect originals (and still would be!) but try finding 'perfect' 40+ year old items!…..the next best thing is all of the above thanks to Marek Lappock (1965swb on here) which look about as NOS as you'll find……...soon be gracing the interior of my car, Marek's items are excellent!

The new engine lid grill is also courtesy of Marek…painted grills like mine always have spokes that look a little too fat and not being black anodised they just won't age correctly….another niggle ticked off the list!

The Cookie Cutters are something I sourced and refurbished myself, fitted with winter tyres……well I may have missed the winter although itching to fit the wheels just to see how the car would of looked when it first rolled out of the factory.

Gradually working through my list although still need one correct screw for a rear quarter hinge if anyone can help with that!

Cookie Cutters….

I've always fancied seeing what my car would look like on Cookie Cutters, just as it left the factory back in 1973.

Justification came from convincing myself that I needed a set of winter wheels and tyres….after mentioning it elsewhere on a here a fellow DDk'er pointed me to set on Ebay at a bargain £199! …even further good fortune when they arrived with a Dec 72 stamp date, exactly the same as my car build…

…as you'd expect they needed refurbing….



….I've never seen a perfect original set in the flesh so colour was a stab in the dark however in all photos they seem to be a fairly dull finish and not too metallic so we opted for a matt finish similar to the centre caps….



….the end result looked pretty good…



…..then mounted with Dunlop Winter Response tyres…

…well I've missed the winter although was itching to see how they looked on the car….







….crazy to think that this is pretty much exactly how the car left the factory over 41 years ago!…..the car's been on quite a journey during that time which has now come full circle

Now all I need is a bit of snow!
