Kersten took up the challenge to wire up all the gauges. Once wired up she was well chuffed when everything worked

Bosch pull switches were also installed to the under dash to isolate the twin CDI boxes.
Great work Dave :)

Do you have a wiring diagram for the twin Bosch pull switches/ CDI boxes setup?

I assume power is sourced from the ignition key switch - if so how is the supply wire physically spliced into the switch?

Thx

Hi Martin.... i will have to consult the Electrical guru on that one...!

Meanwhile..... Little did I know it would be 2 years from drop off of the machined engine parts until an engine builder would make a start….!
In this time a 2nd engine builder would come and go, again no hard feelings just really busy and couldn't give me any time frame for the build.
Fortunately during our introduction I had met a couple of talented engineers who agreed to take on my engine build. At last, my luck was changing and things moved along at a nice pace.

One of the reasons i ended up at the engineers establishment was as a recommendation to have my MFI throttle and stacks refurbished. Quality work commenced in a timely manner and at the agreed price.

Whilst the engine was underway i decided i didn't want to run the standard air box. I had seen on a build in the US a set of very simple air filter housings that were similar to the current K & N filter housings but utilised springs rather than screws to hold them together. I'm not a fan of the screws or stuff with logo's on so i went about making my own.

Utilising the standard MFI buckets as a template i had some thin aluminium sheet laser cut approximately 15mm oversize to allow for a suitable flange to hold the air filters. A few hours later and i was happy with my home brew plain custom housings complete with springs and filters.

Top work! Do you have a shrinker or was all that by hand?

No shrinker involved Sladey. I also had two pieces of MDF laser cut to clamp and use as a former. You can also see a small relief cut on the curvature on each end. Cheating really. :)

Great work on the air filter housings Dave - much better than the 'proprietary' /off-the-shelf items.

Engine-builder looks like a good choice too.

Can you remind us of the engine specs - 'std' 1970 911/20 or incorporating some modern (unseen) 'twists' ?

I'm guessing the former ...

Andy, i have tried to build the 911/20 engine as close to the original as possible. The only exception being the 906 cams which would be pretty much useless on a fast road car. Cam choice was most important and on the advice of Paul Howells, i decided to use the Tuthill rally cam which apparently is "on cam" through the range.

The factory quote of 230 BHP was probably not going to be reached on my engine with these milder cams and it's also known a muffler will also rob you of around 10 BHP. Fueling the motor would also have some compromise. If i could get 220-225 BHP i would be more than happy.

The engine build continued to progress smoothly and was swiftly completed. A big moment for me as the road here had been a tough one. I knew that the "engineers" were in the process of building a Dyno cell on the premises so i decided to park my engine in the corner until the Dyno was built. At least a year passed before i received the call to bring the twin CDI units and coils as it was time to run the engine on the new Dyno.

The engine was run for a few hundred miles, but fueling went all over the place at the top end. We finished up at 213 BHP with a really nice flat torque curve.

In summary i could probably get the 225 BHP once i resolved the fueling issues with the advice that the MFI pump would need to be adjusted probably on a rolling road once the engine was in the car.

I was pretty happy, quicker than an RS and considerably lighter. :)
