Strange Idling issue

Hi all

Having some strange idling issues at the moment on my 2.0E.

It was ticking over nicely at around 800rpm a few thousand miles back once fully warmed up, but then started to idle at 1300rpm instead. To make matters more interesting, it has (in the last 200 miles) begun to idle at 2000 rpm when you come to a halt, until you blip the throttle when it then settles down to the 1300rpm again.

Can't for the life of me think why. Any ideas?

Thanks

People would be dissapointed if I didn't leap in and suggest checking that your advance and retard is working O.K. (Its become a habit recently  ). Might be worth taking the dizzy cap off, and advancing the rotor arm by hand. Then try letting it return to its resting position, do this gently from several points until you are very very sure that it is returning O.K. :it can have a very noticable effect on the idle speed if this is wrong. I recently also suggested to someone they hook up a strobelight and watch what the timing is doing from fast to slow idle.

Needless to say, before anything, worth also getting someone to gently push the accelerator pedal down (engine off) and then release it, so you can see that everything is returning O.K. in the engine bay.

Sorry, no pearls of wisdon here, but at least easy (and free) checks :) .

BTW, often with erratic idling you would be looking for airleaks, but to be honest with those symptoms it doesn't sound like it to me. Not sure if there's anything inside the injection that could cause this: anyone??

I would suggest you check the throttle cable and linkage. Sounds like a classic case of binding and the return spring isn't powerful enought to take it back to the tick-over position without a blip.

I'm sure the linkage theory is the top suspect as Bob suggests (the above advance/retard would be worth a try if linkage appears O.K.). BTW do you have a hand throttle? If so is that returning right down? If you watch in the engine bay as someone lifts the hand throttle, you would expect to a have a little free movement on the lever before it opens throttle. Might be a nice simple explaination for your basic 1300 rpm idle?
