Touring holiday in NORWAY - advice please.

Post by Richard »

Hello DDK,

I'm thinking about chucking the kids and tents into the Landy for a week of touring Norway in the Summer. It looks like there is a ferry from Newcastle to Bergen.

Since I am 0.25% Norweigen and middle aged I quite fancy it.

Can anyone recommend a route or other advice related to this?

Thanks in advance.
Richard

1/4 of 1% Norwegian? That doesn't seem enough to feel you have to tour the place to me ;)

Hi there,
I went there ten years ago via the Newcastle/kristiansand ferry, I've vowed to go back ever since, but never quite made it! Beautiful country and the natives are great!
We rented a massive log cabin on a fiord , which was really cheap compared to other costs.
We drove up to stavanger which took ages as there are speed cameras everywhere and from memory the speed limit is about 50mph. One highlight was taking the ferry up the fiord that has 'the pulpit' on it, 1km vertical cliffs! We then drove back down to stavanger. At the head of the fiord the road takes you up about 25 hairpin bends, I had so much fun in my impreza, I went down and back up again!
Not sure of how to get there now, as the ferry doesn't run from Newcastle as said before.
Cheers

Mike
"Norsk" would be the Norwegian for Norwegian...
"Norrman" would be the Swedish for Norwegian...

Hello from Norway, Norge :brilsmurf:

I dont know of anny ferrys GB - Norway, you have to go via Denmark or Holland.

Newer been to northcape, it's a looooooong drive.
But lots of nice roads here http://www.nasjonaleturistveger.no/en
I would consentrate on the west part for a start.
http://walaker.com/ this is a very nice, family driven, small hotel in Solvorn, Luster.
This is in the bottom of Sognefjorden
Whre is the 25% from?

Richard, I have been to Norway with various Land Rovers over the years. Last went in 2007 and I think the Newcastle – Bergen/Stavanger ferry stopped around then or 2008. Was really convenient from the North of England. Would agree to head to Western Norway’s fjords.

Places I could recommend:
Geiranger - accessed by twisty passes or by ferry. Can go up Dalsnibba toll road to the top of a mountain with fab views down to Geiranger. Check out the link http://www.dalsnibba.no/index.php?lang=en

Brikdalsbreen where a tongue of the big glacier comes down and you can walk up to it.

Sognefjord plus the narrower offshoot fjords – ferries plus long very tunnels.

Various roads around the Jotunheimen mountains eg Vagamo to Fagernes road (Valdresflya) is a good drive. Great ridge walk about halfway along this road here search for Besseggen ridge.

I have camped but tend to use log cabins (look for hytte) which range from simple camping huts with a hot plate, fridge and bunks right up to very well equipped with showers/wc and bedrooms over quite a price range - some with fabulous views.

Hope you manage to go there its well worth it.

This is something I have on the cards for 2014- next year is Monaco in the summer and too close to do the two in the same year!
I've been advised to go June time and possibly not any later?? mainly for the weather and to miss the main tourist times...
Looking at mainly the west coast and have to say some of the information here is superb...

Hi Steve, helicopter, here it is taking off from the Greenpeace mother ship that was over the horizon shadowing the whaling fleet.

here's the whole scene, the white wake in the bottom left is from the stern of a just out of shot Norwegian Navy ship trying to
disperse the blood in the water.

Norway's a great place to visit, and if you're really lucky you can find a restaurant actually serving Minke whale meat...........
cheers, Mike.

The one at walaker hotel is nice, Røysheim close to Lom/Vågåmo was nice, but possible change of staff next year. Anyway Røysheim is worth a stay, no camping.

Mike! Eating whale meat is indeed propper touristick behavior
Newer deared to taste it my self, :pukeright: smels like frying cod liver oil
