newbee from Grantham/Peterborough - speedster clinic 356

Post by presland123 »

Brought this a couple of months back, but have been busy working on my splitty for a friends wedding. Quick blow over, she doesn't look too bad.

Anyway, wedding done, thought I would crack on. Ordered a few parts from the states (just waiting for the gauges now) and am starting to tackle the electrics.

Thought I would also do some work on the running gear.

Thats the one. trying to do a few hours every now and then, but progress is slow.

Any pics on where the fuse board should sit? Happy for any hints/tips as learning as I go.

Next on the list of parts to buy, windscreen & frame.

received my gauges today and senders from vintagespeedsters. Before I get too far into this, anyone have any simple diagrams for the wiring for the reverse of the rev counter & temp/fuel gauge (sorry about the big pics). Not too bad at electrics, but thought I would ask before I get stuck in. Any pics/diagrams to presland_presland@hotmail.com.

One issue though, the VDO temp sender they have sent is marked as a VW rabbit (which I think is a golf) not the Type 1 beetle engine one I asked for! Wil contact vintage speedsters about this, but is it just the VDO sump sender (or dip stick sender) unit that is used for the replica porsche gauges as I have one kicking around in the garage.

Ian, sent a PM about a visit :compress:
Thanks

heres a tip....put a fuse or resistor in the circuit for the rev counter and a large fuse on the battery. My regulator failed, cooked the battery and took out my vintage speedster rev counter which took 3 months to get the relevant spares from china to fix...although I bet much of that delay was down to speedycables incompetance.

I have lots of wiring diagrams just shout if you want anything. Gary helped me no end and the end result is darn good.

Quite agree - and a fuse on the alternator to battery wire in case it gets ripped off or an otherwise innocent fire damages the insulation.....

Cheers everyone.

Plans may be changing, my splitty isnt really suited to being out on the drive in this weather and works crazy at the moment so may have to pass this on to someone to finish. Gutted if I have to, with have to give it some serious thought.

Sad days
