Progress???

Hi Folks,
Glacial progress continues..After being let down several times by the lad who was gonna lay down the paint, I decided to have a go myself.
Although I have the required air fed mask, I decided against 2k and went with good old school cellulose, ( I did my last resto, a fiat 500 with 2k, found it an immense pain working in my tiny garage with an air fed and also found the paint to be very brittle after a year or so)
So here is my first trial panel !!

Nice and shiny straight off of the gun (fluke), but a tiny bit dry in a couple of places......Will leave for a few days and color sand to see if the finish is acceptable, but so far I like it .....

Some interior paint....Came out not too bad
I've only done this once before...My method goes something like this:
After months of prep.....
1 Rub down with 400 grit on soft block, blow off dust, panel wipe, tack rag
2 Shoot primer, wait 24hrs
3 Rub down with 400 grit, blow off dust, panel wipe, tack rag
4 Shoot topcoat, wait 24hrs
5 Rub down with 600 grit, blow off dust, panel wipe, tack rag
still to come (if needed )
rub down with 2000 grit, buff, stand back and smile, (Hopefully......)
Fingers crossed that the paint does not fall off on the first corner !!! Its all a bit trial and error
Cost is around 250 quid at the mo, so if it all goes horribly wrong/looks shite at least I will have had some education for my money....
Funny thing about red paint though.....with all of the cleanup rags/wipes etc in the bin...looks like a mass murderer has been on the loose !

This is taking forever......
Yep, all done in my cramped and dusty garage...
Hopefully I have completed the final coat on Saturday.....After several coats of filler primer and lots of sanding, I put on a few topcoats. It looked fantastic....from about 10 feet....! Close up it was full of scratches showing thro the topcoat

Soooo, more sanding, more filler/primer, more sanding and finally more topcoat.
No wonder professional paint is expensive....
Yesterday I sanded it all again with 2000 grit, and evened out a few dry spots and nibs. Plan is now to buff with G10, G3 and hope that it comes up shiney

Some trial buffing thro the week looked great..
Be next weekend before I get round to that, then get ready for a new MOT, (jings is really a year since I got this on the road....), how time flys

Looking good Gerry. Those gaps are nice and tight on the petrol cap and bonnet, can't see the doors. Did the Cmc come with tight gaps or did you do a lot of work to get it right?? What colour interia did you go for??

Cheers Rich!
I cut filler flap with a fine jigsaw then hinged the cutout....Door gaps are not too bad at all, in fact I had to do some filing back to make some clearance. Bonnet fits well but has a slight warp across width. I've had it latched down with different thickness seals and it comes back level and will hopefully settle down after a while.
Still fighting the paint, and still have a few scratches, but they are responding to 3000 grit and lots of compounding.......
Working away this week so no more progress till weekend...
