Piston Broke

Post by Stevie B »

My engine is no more. After a loud knocking noise started and after dismantling the engine a faulty bearing on a conrod was diagnosed.
On further examination it was discovered my engine had been poorly built and so means additional costs :(
I spoke to TotalHeadturners where I purchased the car from at Christmas/ less than 1000 miles ago and they have offered me £250 towards the bill.
My wife has given me grief over this saying they should pay for the replacement engine after all they forgot to MOT & service the car prior to me having it delivered.
What do you all think?

£250.... Eh....no...

I wouldn't expect a brand new engine but the cost of reasonable repair.

Ie whatever Laurie Pettit would charge to sort the engine out.

Sorry to hear that.
Plenty of good VW engine builders around, shout if you need advice.
Beware of a few off the shelf ones out there if you don't go down the rebuild route.

Ouch.

It was the piston then.

Imo Total Head turners shoud be putting up a bit more than £250 as that doesnt get you much in Aircooled engines these days!!

If you do intend to rebuild the engine then give me a shout and ill refurb the cylinder head for you whilst their off.

What a bummer. Agree with Bruce, should be offering more than £250. Get some quotes together and talk to the guy you got it from.

Thanks guys for sharing my pain. Having the engine rebuilt by Retro Performance in Cannock(air cooled beetle specialist).
He is using what he can from my engine & using a bottom end & case from a part built engine he has in stock. I am having a pair of carbs fitted also.
I would like to spend more on the engine upgrading bits but money is tight at the moment having just bought a red faulty speedster at christmas. :(

Sorry to hear that Steve,

I think the cost of a service and MOT first of all, then depending on what your warranty says he should be offering at least half the cost of replacement/repair.

MOT £40
Service £100
Half Replacement £500 (being fair)

New engine built to spec..... PRICELESS!

£640 please.

Good luck mate

What carbs are you getting?

Most twins need some careful setting up.

Remember if you bought the car less than 6 months ago from a dealer and have a valid dealer invoice you have rights that they sold you a car 'fit for purpose'. If so would be worth a conversation with Citizens Advice as they could tell you the best route to get a reasonable settlement (i.e. the cost of the repair).

Had to have my twins set up on a rolling road to get them right, not cheap either.
