Hang on a min.... a '66 SWB (!) into an -LWB-RSR?!
Why starting with such a base rather than an el cheapo '69 onwards?
take care,
Bert

HI Bert, this is the way i bought the shell i.e. the steel rsr flares had already been fitted after the shell had been blasted etc. TO even get to this stage would cost a fortune on any 912/911 shell. As you know the SWB/LWB cars only main difference is in the rear trailing arms (and control arms) there are other minor differences but nothing that can't be cut/welded. It woul be costly to bring back to a '66 body - anyway I want to go racing and don't care what year the shell is as long as it's straight and solid. I also have a '69 LWB 912 shell - needing some work!!Bertroex wrote:Hang on a min.... a '66 SWB (!) into an -LWB-RSR?!

Thanks to Weissach911 and Andy from R to RSR - both on this forum - I've now had a change of mind. I checked the VIN number on my '66 shell and now find that it's a rare '65 shell. Therefore I'm now building this as a FIA 1965 911 2.0l race car. This means that it's eligible for all the pre '65 races such as the masters, goodwood, le mans classic - just need to get an entry!
First real work started this weekend with the cage going in - this is a Custom Cages historic 911 cage and FIA compliant.
Cage should be finished in a few days then we're going to graft on the rear flares and fit the correct '65 front flares.
I will be on the look out for bits as we go along.
Robin

A few more pics of the cage and also the new rear engine mounts with the old 912 mounts removed. The car is now officially a 911 and not a 912 any more!
I decided to order some "extras" into the cage including sill bars, additional diagonal door bars (std. come with just one) and seat mounting brackets for both driver and passenger sides, this was all done to add rigidity to the shell at the slight expense of weight. FYI the cage is CDS and not T45.

Oops.
That cage looks great but is not in compliamce with appendix K as I understand it.
There are three door bars, and I think more than six attachments to the shell?
And the v braces to half height don't appear in the drawings allowed..
Admittedly its opaque...I try to keep up but it does change every year..
Best to check before going further..much cheaper to crrect now than later..

Nice project you have! I have similar plans for my 73 tub except mine will not have historic pass. Too many newer parts including engine and gearbox.
I believe there will be change for appendix K regarding 8 point cage. Not valid here in Finland yet as our regulations here follows FIA book with some delay. Custom Cages should know what they are doing but better check locally.
How you were able to weld upper tube joints without removing roof panel?
What kind of fuel tank you will be using?
Good luck for hte project and keep updating this thread!
