All, I promised a build thread in turn for some valuable help (thanks MB!) sourcing a clutch lever. Here's the brief story of my rebuild so far.

About 18 months ago I started looking for a project. My budget had me looking at Peugeot 205s, the odd rusty Series Land Rover, or another very tatty kit car. A chap at work said he had an old 911 which had been sat on his drive for a decade, and his wife was telling him it had to go. I went to have a look (it could do no harm, right?) and it was amazingly within budget. He'd done quite a lot of work on it over the years (it had been a rotbox but he'd made a fairly good job of the kidney bowls, inner sills, inner wings and A pillars).

I think the following photos tell most of the story, but over the past 18 months I've repaired the front wings, rebuilt the brakes, done some cosmetic stuff (including mismatching fibreglass bumpers; they were cheaper than getting new bellows!) and done a little bit of paintwork (rattle can job). I've fitted the glass and lights, restored the wheels and done various bits of cleaning and polishing. I've also put a 3.2 engine into it.

The plan for the car is to get it on the road (not long now) and sell the number plate, this will the fund completion of the backdate (I've done the back and need to do the front). I'll run it around for a while and see whether it's worth spending a lot of time (and maybe some money) getting the bodywork up to scratch (I've had no patience for panel gaps or proper paint yet). Later on I might fit a half-cage and some minilites and do some historic rallies or some such. But for now I just want to get it on the road and see what it's like!

Thanks for looking, all constructive comments welcome.

Cheers,

James

I don't usually like that much air conditioning around when I'm working :)

Yeah, heart of a lion, keep at it and you'll have something you can really enjoy.

Looking forward to more seasonal pics and updates

top job

Right, brakes are bled (seems to be a very short pedal travel, perhaps everything needs to bed in a bit) and I finally found the clutch lever I needed (well, Mike B found it) so that's here, just need to machine a little spigot to hold the clutch cable in and find a circlip to hold the lever on. The preIB bumper is here (RS style thing off eBay) and I may have found a long bonnet, but need to splash out on some indicators so the front end backdate might have to wait until I've got the MOT sorted. The bumper has clearly been in the wars, nicely smashed up, and brown paint covering the nice shade of blue that I would eventually like to go!

Not long now, just the handbrake and electrics before it's got a chance of winning itself an MOT.

When I bought the car, the handbrake worked. It's suddenly got really slack. Everything looks ok at the lever end. I think both the cables are intact, but there isn't enough adjustment on the little sprocket wheel thingies to tighten it up, so I reckon the discs have got to come off so I can find out what's going on. Any ideas?

Also, what's the consensus on the brake rainshields? I'm going to be using the stock brakes but might upgrade the pads, car will mostly be used on the road but might have the occasional foray onto the track.
