Hi, a friend of mine is looking for a car in the US to ship to Europe and I thought of asking a few questions here:
- Has anyone done that?
- What kind of costs are involved in the operation?
- Is it better/easier to buy the car from a US state that's near the coastline or it makes no difference?
- Do you know any companies that would take care of picking up the car from the seller and deliver it in Portugal?
Thank's in advance!

Ricardo - I've done it several times without any problems (however the exchange rate was much more favourable !).
Transporting the car to the nearest port is usually a minor part of the expense - the actual international shipping costs are the major expense so I would concentrate on getting the best car rather than trying to find a car for sale close to the port.
I would recommend Kingstown Shipping - they will be able to provide a door-to-door service if required - speak to Mark Cowley :

Feel free to email me if you need any additional info.

Agree with Andy. Pretty sure if you do a search on here, someone broke down the costs. If I remember correctly shipping cost me around $2,500 with insurance which included transportation from Oregon to San Francisco which is a fair distance. Exchange rate was 2:1 in those days though and don't forget to factor in import duties.

Vasco,
With your weird portugese laws about having classic cars running original wheels and tyre sizes etc:
Buy as original as you can! You know what a nightmare it is sourcing all the cosmetic and rare bits and bobs.
Good luck in your search,
Bert
